PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is taking the next step in transforming Gambir Station into one of Jakarta's premier transportation hubs. The phased development aims to deliver a smoother travel experience, strengthen multimodal connectivity, and unlock greater value for passengers, businesses, and the surrounding community.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin emphasized that Gambir's transformation is not intended to compete with Manggarai Station. Instead, both stations will play complementary roles within Greater Jakarta's integrated public transportation network.

Gambir is being developed as the main gateway for long-distance train services in the city center, while Manggarai will continue serving as the primary interchange station. Together, they create a stronger and more connected transportation system for Jakarta.

Strategically located in the heart of Jakarta, Gambir Station sits adjacent to the National Monument (Monas), government offices, business districts, hotels, and major city attractions. This prime location positions Gambir as a seamless gateway where passengers can easily transition between rail services, urban transportation, and activities across the capital.

Today, Gambir serves 34 scheduled long-distance train services every day, with approximately 78 passenger boarding and alighting movements, while its elevated railway is crossed by 326 Bogor Line Commuter Line services daily. Although commuter trains currently do not serve passengers at Gambir Station, KAI is evaluating the possibility of introducing Commuter Line services in phases, subject to infrastructure readiness, operational capacity, signaling systems, electrical upgrades, and safety requirements.

The development also responds to the growing demand for public transportation across Greater Jakarta. Commuter Line ridership has increased by more than 58 percent over the past three years, with the Bogor Line remaining the busiest corridor. To accommodate this growth, KAI continues expanding network capacity, including platform upgrades at Bogor Station to support longer train formations.

Beyond transportation, Gambir's transformation is designed to create a vibrant destination under the concept of a Modern Station & Lifestyle Hub—combining mobility, culture, lifestyle, and commercial activities within one integrated urban space.

Future plans include stronger connections with TransJakarta, MRT Jakarta, pedestrian access to Monas, retail outlets, restaurants, cafés, lounges, hotels, meeting facilities, rooftop public spaces, and improved intermodal connections, creating a more convenient and enjoyable experience for both passengers and visitors.

"We want every customer to enjoy a seamless journey—from entering the station and finding their platform to connecting with other transport modes and exploring the city. That's the travel experience we're building at Gambir," Bobby explained.

The project also supports KAI's long-term strategy to strengthen non-farebox revenue by maximizing the value of its station assets. Currently, around 96 percent of the company's revenue still comes from rail operations, making commercial development an important opportunity to diversify income through retail, hospitality, food and beverage, and other supporting services.

Today, Gambir Station already hosts 132 commercial tenants, including restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores, souvenir outlets, lounges, transit hotels, ATMs, vending machines, and various passenger services. Once fully developed, the expanded commercial area is expected to accommodate hundreds of new businesses while creating an estimated 500 to 1,000 direct and supporting jobs.

KAI Finance and General Affairs Director Indarto Pamoengkas added that the company's strong financial performance provides a solid foundation for continued investment in customer experience, operational excellence, and railway safety. In 2025, KAI Group recorded total assets of IDR 105.43 trillion and net profit of IDR 2.28 trillion, enabling the company to continuously improve infrastructure and service quality.

For KAI, the transformation of Gambir Station represents far more than a station upgrade. It is about creating a modern urban gateway that enhances mobility, supports tourism and local businesses, strengthens economic activity, and delivers a better travel experience for millions of passengers.

Every development we undertake must create meaningful value for both our customers and the community. Gambir is being transformed into a station that is easier to access, more comfortable to use, seamlessly connected to central Jakarta, and capable of generating long-term economic benefits for the surrounding area.
