KAI Transit Houses Along Sumatra Route Bring the Charm of Rumah Limas to Workers

Working along railway routes in South Sumatra and Lampung comes with its own challenges. Some stations are located quite far from residential areas and are surrounded by plantations and forests that become increasingly quiet at night. For workers who finish their shifts at night, these conditions make the journey home something that needs to be considered more carefully.

To provide workers with a place to rest, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) provides transit houses at several points. These facilities give workers a place to take a break before continuing their journey when conditions become more favorable, while also being adapted to the characteristics of each work area and the needs of workers in the field.

In the Divre III Palembang area, transit houses are available in Payakabung, Serdang, Karangenda, Gunungmegang, Muaragula, Muaralawai, Sukacinta, Simpang, Gelumbang, Penanggiran, and Merapi. Meanwhile, in the Divre IV Tanjungkarang area, transit houses are available in Rengas, Tulungbuyut, Negeri Agung, Tanjungrajo, Waypisang, Sungai Tuha, Gilas, Lubukbatang, as well as several other locations.

Interestingly, several of these transit houses feature the charm of Rumah Limas, a traditional architectural style closely associated with South Sumatra. This local touch can be seen in the pyramid-shaped roofs, elevated structures, wide eaves, geometric ornaments, latticework, and wood-themed elements.

Rumah Limas itself developed alongside the lives of the people of Palembang and the environment of South Sumatra, which is closely connected to the Musi River, wetlands, and tropical climate. Beyond being a place to live, the house also serves as a space for resting, gathering, and spending time together. This concept has found a new expression through KAI’s transit houses, which are adapted to the needs of today’s workers.

As a result, the transit houses are not only places for workers to rest after their shifts but also provide an atmosphere that feels connected to the areas where they work. Their functions meet today’s needs, while the Rumah Limas character adds a distinctive local identity.

Providing a comfortable working environment is an important part of KAI’s commitment to its workers. As of June 2026, KAI’s parent company is supported by 28,003 workers, with 20,446 workers, or around 73 percent, between the ages of 18 and 40.

This commitment to the work environment has also received external recognition. In Indonesia’s Best Employers 2026, compiled by Tempo together with Statista, KAI ranked second nationally with a score of 96.25. The assessment covered work culture, development opportunities, work environment, diversity, company image, and workers’ recommendations of the company.

For workers assigned far from city centers and residential areas, having a safe and comfortable place to rest is an important part of maintaining their condition. Amid the plantations, forests, villages, and cities crossed by railway tracks in South Sumatra and Lampung, KAI’s transit houses serve as simple spaces closely connected to the daily lives of its workers.
