Plans to strengthen transportation services to Seribu Island starting in 2027 are creating opportunities for a more connected multimodal journey between mainland areas and the islands. The plan is not only about strengthening sea transportation, but also about connecting travel from various areas of Jakarta and Greater Jakarta to departure points for crossings.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government plans to transfer the management of sea transportation to and from Seribu Island to PT Transportasi Jakarta. The move is aimed at making travel easier and more efficient while providing more equal transportation access for people living in Seribu Island and other areas of Jakarta.

For island communities, better connectivity can make it easier to travel to education centers, healthcare services, government offices, commercial areas, and workplaces on the mainland of Jakarta. At the same time, people from the mainland can have easier access to Seribu Island through an interconnected public transportation network.

As part of this travel network, trains can serve as one of the modes connecting people from various areas to the coastal areas of North Jakarta before they continue their journey by urban transportation and sea transportation. KAI Group, through Commuter Line, serves passengers at Angke Station and Ancol Station, which are located close to several access points to the coastal areas.

Angke Station is one of the travel options to Kali Adem Port in the Muara Angke area. The distance between Angke Station and Kali Adem Port is around 7–8 kilometers, allowing passengers to continue their journey by urban transportation to the port, which is one of the main departure points for crossings to Seribu Island.

Another option is through Ancol Station, which is located around 2–3 kilometers from the Marina Ancol area. The area is one of the departure points for marine tourism trips to various islands in Seribu Island. The close distance between the station and the area provides an alternative for people who want to combine train travel with connecting transportation to reach marine tourism destinations.

Passenger activity at both stations shows the high level of movement within the transportation network. From January to June 2026, Angke Station recorded 1,505,477 gate-in activities and 1,584,099 gate-out activities, bringing the total passenger activity to 3,089,576 during the six-month period.

The figure also shows an upward trend in activity at Angke Station. In 2024, the station recorded 5,520,375 gate-in and gate-out activities. The figure then increased to 5,927,071 activities in 2025, or 7.37 percent higher than the previous year.

Meanwhile, Ancol Station recorded 295,180 gate-in activities and 255,109 gate-out activities from January to June 2026. Total passenger activity reached 550,289, or around 53.4 percent of the total passenger activity throughout 2025, which reached 1,030,402.

The high activity at Angke Station and Ancol Station shows that the Commuter Line network can become part of the travel route to Jakarta’s coastal areas. The more public transportation options that are connected to departure points, the wider the access to Seribu Island can become.

This connectivity also provides benefits beyond travel between locations. An integrated transportation network can connect island communities with various activities and services on the mainland, while also giving people from different areas across Greater Jakarta greater opportunities to reach Seribu Island by public transportation.

From an economic perspective, connectivity is important because Seribu Island has strong marine tourism potential. The area consists of more than 110 islands with beaches, waters, and marine ecosystems that are part of Jakarta’s natural wealth.

Destinations such as Pari Island, Tidung Island, Pramuka Island, and Untung Jawa Island are popular tourist destinations. Pari Island is known for its white sandy beaches and clear seawater, while Pramuka Island offers marine views and a relatively well-preserved island environment.

Easier access to these destinations can provide direct and indirect benefits to local communities. Increased tourist movement can support various economic activities, including accommodation, culinary businesses, boat rentals, tour guides, trade, local transportation services, and other businesses operated by communities on the islands.

The close location of Seribu Island to Jakarta’s main activity centers is an opportunity that can be developed through better transportation connectivity. When railways, urban transportation, and sea transportation are connected as part of one journey, people have more options to reach their destinations without depending on a single mode of transportation.

Stronger connectivity also highlights the role of each transportation mode in continuing people’s journeys. From various areas across Greater Jakarta, a journey can begin with the Commuter Line to Jakarta, continue with transportation to the port, and then proceed by sea transportation to Seribu Island.

As the transportation network becomes more connected, travel to Seribu Island can become easier while also expanding access to mobility, supporting local economic activities, and bringing the potential of the island areas closer to Jakarta’s main activity centers.
