Weekends are the perfect time to take a break from the daily routine. Whether it is visiting family, exploring local food, discovering a new city, or simply enjoying a change of scenery, people in East Java now have more travel options with Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya, connecting various cities through scheduled daily train services.

From January to July 2026, Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya, operated by KAI Commuter, served 10,009,552 customers. This represents an 8.15 percent increase compared with the same period in 2025, when the service carried 9,255,362 customers. In other words, an additional 754,190 customers chose commuter trains for their journeys.

The positive trend can also be seen over the past few years. In 2023, Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya served 13,360,638 customers. The figure grew 10.26 percent to 14,731,053 customers in 2024, before increasing another 8.73 percent to 16,016,534 customers in 2025.

Over two years, the number of customers increased by around 2.66 million, or 19.88 percent, compared with 2023. The growth highlights the increasing need for intercity mobility across East Java, whether for work, education, business, family visits, or leisure.

KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said local train services are becoming increasingly connected to people’s everyday activities.

In the first seven months of 2026, more than 10 million customers have used Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya. Behind that number are people going to work, studying, doing business, visiting family, and enjoying weekend trips. The railway network is making different cities easier to reach.

Today, Commuter Line Area VIII Surabaya operates 50 daily trips across six services: Commuter Line Dhoho, Penataran, Jenggala, Arjonegoro, Supas, and Blorasura.

The network covers a wide range of destinations, connecting Surabaya with Sidoarjo, Mojokerto, Jombang, Kediri, Tulungagung, Blitar, Malang, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Lamongan, Bojonegoro, and Cepu.

From Kediri’s Culinary Scene to Blitar’s Heritage

Commuter Line Dhoho offers a convenient option for exploring the route from Surabaya to Kertosono, Kediri, Tulungagung, and Blitar.

A trip to Kediri can be a great choice for customers looking to enjoy the city’s atmosphere and local culinary offerings. Meanwhile, Blitar offers a variety of historical destinations, including the area around Bung Karno’s Tomb.

For those looking to spend the weekend in Malang, Commuter Line Penataran connects Surabaya with Malang and Blitar. Malang is one of the popular weekend destinations, offering everything from culinary experiences and the heritage charm of Kayutangan to easy access to destinations across the wider Malang area.

Meanwhile, Commuter Line Jenggala serves the Surabaya, Sidoarjo, and Mojokerto corridor. From Mojokerto, customers can continue their journey to Trowulan, an area known for its historical links to the Majapahit Kingdom. Sidoarjo also offers plenty of culinary experiences and economic activities closely connected to Surabaya.

Exploring East Java Along the Northern Route

For customers looking to explore northern East Java, Commuter Line Arjonegoro connects Sidoarjo and Surabaya with Lamongan and Bojonegoro.

Beyond supporting daily commuting for work and other activities, the route also opens access to a variety of culinary, cultural, and local destinations along East Java’s northern coastal corridor.

Heading east, Commuter Line Supas connects Surabaya with Pasuruan and Probolinggo. Probolinggo serves as one of the gateways to the Bromo area, while Pasuruan offers a variety of nature, cultural, and culinary experiences.

Meanwhile, Commuter Line Blorasura connects Surabaya Pasar Turi with Lamongan, Bojonegoro, and Cepu. The service further extends connectivity from Surabaya’s main activity centers toward western East Java and the border with Central Java.

One Train, Many Stories

Surabaya itself remains a popular destination for customers traveling from surrounding cities. From stations in the city center, customers can continue their journey to explore Tunjungan, Peneleh, Surabaya’s Old Town, museums, culinary spots, and various public spaces.

According to Anne, the diverse activities of customers show that local trains are no longer simply a mode of intercity transportation, but have become part of people’s everyday lives.

Trips that were once seen simply as intercity journeys can now easily become part of a regular routine: commuting to work, going to university, visiting family, doing business, hunting for local food, or simply enjoying a weekend in the next city.

Each route has its own stories and serves different community needs. There are customers traveling for work, students returning to their hometowns, families visiting one another, and people looking to enjoy another city over the weekend. We want train services to remain a transportation option that feels close to people’s everyday lives.
