Want a Safe School Vacation with Your Family? Here Are Smart Tips for Staying Safe at Railroad Crossings!
The school holidays have arrived! This is the most anticipated golden moment to plan a road trip, family vacation, or simply a relaxing intercity getaway. However, to ensure these precious moments of togetherness are not disrupted by unforeseen circumstances, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) encourages everyone to be smart travelers who always prioritize safety, especially when crossing level crossings.
As part of its commitment to providing a safe transportation ecosystem, KAI has simple tips that must be followed when crossing a level crossing: Stop for a moment, look left and right, listen to your surroundings, obey signals, and cross only when conditions are absolutely safe.
KAI's concern for public safety is a key commitment of the company. Through various physical handling programs and active collaboration with stakeholders, KAI has successfully reduced the number of accidents at level crossings in the period ending June 22, 2026, compared to the previous year.
The total number of accidents dropped from 138 to 134 (a 3% decrease), and the number of vehicles affected also dropped from 144 to 134 (a 7% decrease). The total number of fatalities also dropped drastically from 151 to 113 (a 25% decrease).
Although the trend continues to improve, KAI reminds us that even one life is too precious to risk. Data shows that 88% of total accidents (or 118 incidents) are still triggered by reckless behavior of crossing barriers. Therefore, KAI encourages the public to change their hasty habits for the sake of their loved ones.
Many drivers assume barriers are the only indicator of safety. In fact, KAI data shows that 46% of accidents occur at crossings with gates, while 54% occur at crossings without gates.
Trains require a long braking distance and cannot stop suddenly. So, whether a crossing has a barrier or not, the best and safest decision is still yours to stop and ensure the situation is clear before proceeding.
As a form of social and commercial responsibility oriented towards public safety, KAI is actively involved in the field. By June 2026, KAI had successfully closed and narrowed 226 illegal crossings, surpassing the program's initial target of 177 points (achieving the target by 128%).
In addition to focusing on infrastructure, KAI also intensively raised public awareness through various educational initiatives from January to May 2026:
There were 1,036 direct safety outreach activities at crossings; 167 special awareness activities in schools, places of worship, and community groups; the installation of 308 warning media in the form of banners and signs at strategic points; and the implementation of 44 Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) activities that touched the community.
KAI also reminds everyone not to use the area around the railway tracks for playing, taking photos, or parking vehicles, as the train operating area must be 100% sterile.
Let's make this year's school holidays filled with happy stories. Continue to support orderly and safe public transportation by becoming a pioneer in road safety. Remember, it's better to lose a minute or two stopping at a crossing than to lose precious moments with your family forever. Happy holidays!
