31 Years as a Trusted Choice, Argo Continues to Deliver a More Comfortable Travel Experience
For nearly 31 years, Argo services have been accompanying millions of journeys across Indonesia, becoming a trusted choice for customers seeking comfortable, reliable, and memorable intercity rail travel. Since the launch of Argo Bromo JS-950 on 31 July 1995, the service has continuously evolved, introducing innovations that make every journey more convenient, enjoyable, and connected. The milestone continued on 24 September 1997 with the introduction of Argo Bromo Anggrek, further expanding the Argo family. Since then, Argo has continued to grow alongside changing customer expectations through modern rolling stock, upgraded interiors, enhanced onboard amenities, faster travel times, and digital services that simplify every stage of the travel experience.
Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said the Argo brand has become an important part of KAI's journey in continuously enhancing the quality of intercity rail services. For nearly three decades, Argo has continued to evolve alongside customer needs. Continuous improvements have been made to trains, onboard facilities, travel times, and digital services to ensure that every journey is more comfortable, practical, and relevant to today's travel lifestyle.
Today, the Argo family remains one of KAI's flagship premium services, operating eight routes: Argo Wilis (Bandung–Surabaya Gubeng), Argo Semeru (Gambir–Surabaya Gubeng), Argo Lawu and Argo Dwipangga (Gambir–Solo Balapan), as well as Argo Sindoro, Argo Muria, and Argo Merbabu (Gambir–Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng), together with Argo Anjasmoro (Gambir–Surabaya Pasar Turi). These Executive Class services operate at speeds of up to 120 km/h, delivering a premium travel experience across Java.
Customer enthusiasm for Argo services continues to grow. During the first half of 2026, Argo Merbabu served 277,780 customers, an increase of 13.97% compared with the same period last year. Argo Wilis served 142,412 customers, up 11.62%, while Argo Lawu recorded 94,971 customers, increasing 5.64%, and Argo Dwipangga served 100,576 customers, up 1.23%. Meanwhile, Argo Anjasmoro welcomed 84,871 customers during the January–June 2026 period. These positive figures reflect the growing preference for Argo services among customers travelling for business, education, leisure, or family visits, reaffirming the brand's position as one of Indonesia's most trusted premium rail services.
The Argo journey has also continued through product evolution. Argo Bromo Anggrek has been rebranded as KA Anggrek, while Argo Parahyangan now operates as KA Parahyangan. Although the names have changed, the commitment to delivering excellent service remains unchanged. The refreshed identity has been welcomed by customers. During the first half of 2026, KA Anggrek served 234,299 customers, representing a 39.99% increase compared with the same period in 2025. KA Parahyangan served 570,192 customers, up 32.61% year on year.
According to Anne, the rebranding reflects KAI's ongoing product development strategy, ensuring that each service has a stronger identity while meeting the unique travel needs of different customer segments. At the same time, the company's commitment to safety, punctuality, operational reliability, and passenger comfort remains at the heart of every journey.
To provide an even richer travel experience, KAI continues to introduce new-generation rolling stock and premium travel options. Customers can now choose from Stainless Steel New Generation Executive Coaches, New Generation Economy Coaches, Luxury Class, Panoramic Coaches, and the exclusive Suite Class Compartment, offering greater privacy and premium onboard comfort.
Demand for these premium experiences continues to rise. Throughout the first half of 2026, Suite Class Compartment served 26,123 customers, representing a remarkable 64.76% increase compared with the same period last year. This growth highlights the increasing demand for private, comfortable, and highly personalized rail travel experiences.
The customer journey is also supported by Access by KAI, the company's integrated digital platform. Through a single application, customers can book tickets, plan their journeys using the Trip Planner feature, select preferred seats, order Railfood, reserve hotels, and monitor train locations in real time through Live Tracking. These digital innovations are designed to make every stage of the journey easier—from planning the trip to arriving at the destination.
As Argo approaches its 31st anniversary, its legacy continues to reflect KAI's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. By continuously improving services, introducing modern travel experiences, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability, KAI aims to ensure that every intercity journey is not only efficient but also comfortable, enjoyable, and truly memorable for every customer.
