54 CC205 Locomotives Complete KAI's Fleet, Boosting South Sumatra Logistics
South Sumatra’s railway logistics network is entering a new chapter with the completion of the delivery of 54 CC205 locomotives from Progress Rail. The milestone was marked during the Locomotive Handover Celebration held at Ruang Jaladara, Jakarta Railway Center, Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/7/2026), representing another step forward in strengthening rail-based logistics services.
The completion of the procurement also reflects the growing long-term partnership between KAI and Progress Rail. Beyond delivering new locomotives, the collaboration covers technology development, maintenance systems, and workforce capability enhancement to support more reliable, efficient, and competitive logistics services.
The 54 locomotives, consisting of CC205 Series 25 and 26, are designated to support operations in Regional Division III Palembang. Deliveries were carried out in phases, beginning in August 2025, with the final unit officially received in May 2026.
The addition of these locomotives forms part of KAI’s strategic initiative to accommodate the growing demand for coal transportation and other commodities across southern Sumatra. The expanded fleet also paves the way for greater logistics capacity, in line with the readiness of railway infrastructure, freight terminals, operational patterns, and evolving customer needs.
Powered by a 2,200-horsepower AC traction engine, the CC205 delivers stronger and more modern performance. It is equipped with advanced features such as the Driver Safety System, PowerView Detect, and UpTime Connect, helping enhance operational safety, monitor track conditions, and provide real-time locomotive performance monitoring around the clock.
The locomotive’s capability has also been demonstrated through operational testing in the Palembang area, where a single CC205 successfully hauled 60 freight wagons. The results serve as part of KAI’s evaluation in designing the most effective operating pattern while maintaining infrastructure readiness, route conditions, locomotive crew competency, and railway safety standards.
The successful completion of the 54-locomotive procurement is the result of close collaboration between Progress Rail, KAI, and all stakeholders involved throughout the production, delivery, testing, training, and operational preparation processes. This partnership also lays the foundation for future cooperation in technology development, maintenance support, and technical capability enhancement to ensure the fleet operates with greater reliability and efficiency.
The logistics service enhancement is being driven through a people, process, and performance approach. From the people perspective, 305 employees have completed specialized training, including 195 personnel in mechanical, electrical, and maintenance disciplines, along with 110 operational staff, ensuring that workforce readiness keeps pace with the introduction of advanced technology.
From the process perspective, the procurement includes a two-year maintenance program, technical support, knowledge transfer, and capability development for KAI employees in operating and maintaining the CC205 locomotives. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the company's long-term capability in managing a modern locomotive fleet independently.
From the performance perspective, the CC205 is designed to haul larger train formations, enabling more efficient freight operations. Under certain operating conditions, a single CC205 has the potential to replace two previous-generation locomotives, while continuing to meet technical evaluations and stringent railway safety standards.
Its AC traction technology, remote monitoring system, and integrated safety features also enable KAI to continuously monitor locomotive performance, fuel consumption, component conditions, and operational readiness. Regular evaluations ensure that increased freight capacity is supported by reliable equipment and safe railway operations.
Looking ahead, the 54 new locomotives are expected to support the gradual expansion of logistics capacity to around 85 million tons annually, subject to the completion of supporting infrastructure, terminal readiness, network capacity, and future customer demand across South Sumatra.
The partnership between KAI and Progress Rail will continue to grow through technology transfer, workforce competency development, maintenance capability enhancement, and the expansion of supporting facilities within Indonesia. Together, these efforts are aimed at building a more modern, efficient, and sustainable national railway and logistics ecosystem.
