Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) now presents the Pioneer Train (KA Perintis) service in South Sulawesi, marking the first railway operation on the island of Sulawesi. This service connects several strategic areas through two routes: Mandai–Garongkong (82 km) and Mangilu–Garongkong (58 km). Since beginning operations in October 2022, KA Perintis Sulsel has served 431,325 passengers up to September 2024, reflecting strong public enthusiasm for a new transportation option that is safe, comfortable, and efficient.

The operation of KA Perintis Sulsel is supported through collaboration between KAI and PT Sulsel Citra Indonesia (Perseroda), forming a consortium to ensure smooth operations. Currently, 53 personnel are assigned to support the service, consisting of 23 KAI staff and 30 PT SCI staff.

KAI provides two sets of Electric Diesel Rail Trains (KRDE) operating daily with a total of six trips serving 11 stations, namely Mandai, Maros, Ramang-ramang, Pangkajene, Mangilu, Labakkang, Ma’rang, Mandalle, Tanete Rilau, Barru, and Garongkong. During January–September 2024, the train carried 203,595 passengers, showing a significant increase of 38.32% compared to the same period in 2023 (147,181 passengers). With a total of 1,830 trips, KA Perintis Sulsel maintains strong punctuality, reaching 93% on departures and 94% on arrivals.

As part of a national strategic project, this railway line is planned to be extended to Parepare, covering approximately 142 km, bringing significant positive impacts to community mobility. Through close cooperation with central and local governments as well as relevant stakeholders, KAI is committed to providing safe and comfortable transportation services for the public.

The presence of KA Perintis in South Sulawesi not only improves inter-regional accessibility but also opens new economic opportunities for local communities, making access to education, healthcare, and employment easier. This initiative aligns with KAI’s commitment to supporting equitable modern infrastructure development across Indonesia while strengthening social and cultural connectivity in Sulawesi.
