To Create Competitive Human Resources, KAI Presents the IIA Event
Human Resources (HR) are the main foundation of KAI’s success. As the largest railway transportation company in Indonesia, KAI has proven that success does not only depend on physical infrastructure, but also on the dedication and excellence of its human resources. In KAI’s transformation, HR is one of the key elements. Therefore, before transforming business and technology, KAI first transforms the corporate values within each individual employee.
“KAI’s transformation cannot be separated from the overall improvement of HR quality. Previously, KAI has successfully transformed, and the root of service advancement lies in the mindset change of its HR. Therefore, KAI continuously develops its HR with various values, knowledge, and understanding in both hard skills and soft skills to deliver excellent service,” said Vice President of Public Relations KAI, Joni Martinus.
The quality of HR performance must also always be maintained and monitored by providing space and opportunities for KAI employees to innovate and create. Through the Quality Assurance Unit and Good Corporate Governance (GCG), KAI has initiated various programs to realize this. One of the flagship programs is the Innovation and Improvement Award (IIA).
Innovation is one of the company cultures under the Adaptive value. Every KAI employee is expected to be innovative to create corporate excellence. The IIA is basically a program that gives awards to employees for innovations and/or improvements that have been implemented and proven to provide positive contributions to the company, such as cost efficiency or revenue improvement.

One of the innovations by KAI employees is a waste processing cabinet that converts waste into useful products (paving blocks), implemented at the Bandung Train Depot.
Until 2023, KAI has held the IIA for the 12th time since its first implementation in 2012. A total of 847 works have been registered during the IIA program.
“Analysis shows that most participants in the IIA are from the millennial generation,” Joni revealed.
The types of works competed in IIA consist of technical & technology, and non-technical categories. Technical & technology works are innovations that arise in response to the continuous need to reduce costs, simplify work processes, with or without technology, and adapt to new trends and needs.
Meanwhile, non-technical innovations arise in response to inconsistent or specific needs to provide benefits to internal and external customers, either directly or indirectly.
There are three categories of innovation works: individual works, group works, and project works. The selection process is very strict, and only qualified participants can pass. Judging is conducted by both internal and external judges. In addition, KAI also registers Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for innovations that are gradually implemented.
Every year, KAI also participates in the winning innovations of IIA in the National Quality and Productivity Work Forum (TKMPN), a national-level innovation competition and exhibition involving state-owned enterprises, private companies, government institutions, universities, and other organizations.
This year, on September 6, 2023, KAI made history by participating for the first time in the International Quality & Productivity Convention (IQPC) held in Malaysia. In this event, KAI competed with 93 teams from 7 countries. By sending 3 dedicated teams, KAI entered the competition with confidence and determination at the international level.

The use of technology to improve work productivity at UPT Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng makes work easier, more effective, and more efficient using the Wheel Fleet Management System Application.
The results were remarkable. KAI not only participated, but also excelled by bringing home outstanding awards. From the 3 teams sent, KAI achieved 2 Excellent Awards and 1 Outstanding Award. This achievement proves that KAI’s innovations have significant impact and are competitive globally.
“KAI’s participation in IQPC reaffirms the company’s commitment to continuous innovation. In an era of rapid change and development, KAI understands that innovation is the key to sustainable growth and delivering the best services to the Indonesian people,” said Joni.
The three teams participating in this event came from Daop 2 Bandung, Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, and KAI Head Office. Their works were:
The Crows Team (Daop 2) focusing on efficient processing and utilization of hazardous waste (B3) generator filters by creating waste-processing cabinets into valuable products (paving blocks) at Bandung Train Depot in 2022.
WFMS Team (Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng) with the theme of improving efficiency in wheel spare parts usage through the Wheel Fleet Management System application in 2022.
Wardana FK Team (Head Office) with a project to improve competence and attitude of train dispatch officers through a new method combining procedure analysis and simulation in videography visualization media, focusing on safety.
The works of these three teams in IQPC 2023 reflect KAI’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, quality, and safety.
“Their achievements not only make KAI proud but also inspire other units to continue innovating to improve work productivity while prioritizing safety and business effectiveness,” Joni concluded.
In the future, management will evaluate all innovations submitted through IIA. Successful innovations will be implemented into company operations, followed by continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure effectiveness and improvement.
