Nusantara Explorer Moves Closer to Debut as Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng Completes Static and Dynamic Testing
The journey toward a new Indonesian luxury sleeper train experience is gaining momentum. Two Nusantara Explorer train cars have completed their interior development at the Surabaya Gubeng Railway Workshop and have now undergone static and dynamic testing.
The dynamic test took the train cars along the Surabaya Gubeng–Lamongan route and back. This important testing stage was carried out to evaluate the trains' performance while in motion, including stability, braking systems, electrical systems, and the functionality of supporting facilities.
Before that, static testing was conducted to ensure that the systems and facilities function properly while the train is stationary. Both testing stages are part of the evaluation process before Nusantara Explorer moves forward to the next phase of development.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that Nusantara Explorer is still undergoing gradual development and refinement at the Surabaya Gubeng Railway Workshop.
Of the planned 12-car trainset, two cars have now completed their interior development and undergone static and dynamic testing. The test results will serve as important input for the next stage of refinement.
Designed as a luxury sleeper train, Nusantara Explorer aims to offer more than just a way to get from one destination to another. It is being developed as an immersive travel experience that combines private sleeping spaces, personalized service, culinary experiences, entertainment, and the opportunity to enjoy Indonesia's landscapes along the journey.
The Nusantara Explorer trainset is planned to consist of 12 cars featuring a variety of functions, including sleeper cabins, a Grand Restaurant, a lounge, and operational support cars. The entire development and modification process is being carried out at the Surabaya Gubeng Railway Workshop.
Nusantara Explorer showcases the capabilities of the Surabaya Gubeng Railway Workshop team in developing railway facilities with increasingly diverse service concepts. Their technical expertise and attention to detail are essential throughout every stage of the development process.
For a more personalized rest experience, Nusantara Explorer is designed to offer three sleeper cabin categories: Signature Class, Advance Class, and Compact Class. Each category features a different room layout and level of privacy, allowing passengers to choose an experience that best suits their needs.
Signature Class is designed with a more spacious cabin and private facilities. Advance Class combines sleeping comfort with an efficient cabin layout. Meanwhile, Compact Class offers a more streamlined design while still providing essential resting and storage facilities to support a comfortable journey.
The experience is not just about getting a good night's sleep. Nusantara Explorer is also designed to turn dining into part of the journey. The Grand Restaurant will serve as a dedicated culinary space, offering a more personal dining experience through carefully arranged tables, lighting, and private dining areas.
Passengers will also have access to a lounge designed as a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the journey. Featuring comfortable seating, a bar, entertainment facilities, a piano, an audio system, and windows overlooking the passing scenery, the lounge is designed to make every moment onboard more memorable.
The interior design brings Indonesia's character into the travel experience. Neoclassical proportions, warm-toned materials, soft lighting, and Indonesian cultural motifs come together to create a distinct identity for each space while maintaining a cohesive overarching theme: a journey through the Nusantara.
Cultural inspiration can be found in elements such as wayang kulit, Batik Lasem, Sekar Jagad, and Balinese motifs. These elements are incorporated into decorative patterns, materials, interior details, and color selections, creating a unique character throughout the train.
Indonesian cultural identity is an important part of the Nusantara Explorer experience. The spaces, motifs, culinary offerings, and services are being developed to allow passengers to experience the character of the Nusantara throughout their journey.
Following the static and dynamic testing of the two train cars, KAI will continue with technical evaluations, facility refinements, and the development of the remaining cars according to the planned development stages.
Information regarding the route, schedule, fares, final trainset composition, and operational launch of Nusantara Explorer will be announced once the development, testing, inspection, and service preparations have been fully completed.
KAI will ensure that all aspects of safety, rolling stock reliability, and service readiness meet the required standards before Nusantara Explorer begins serving passengers.
