President Prabowo Unveils the Revitalized Semarang Tawang Station, Where Heritage Meets a Better Travel Experience
Semarang Tawang Station has officially entered a new chapter. President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the revitalized historic station on Thursday (July 30), marking another milestone in preserving Indonesia's railway heritage while enhancing passenger comfort.
The revitalization goes beyond restoring the station's appearance. It creates a more enjoyable travel experience while preserving the unique character of one of Indonesia's oldest railway stations. Built in 1911 and operational since 1914, Semarang Tawang Station has long stood as a symbol of the country's railway history.
During the inauguration, President Prabowo emphasized that preserving the station also means preserving Indonesia's identity and historical legacy.
"Preserving Tawang Station means preserving our identity and our historical journey. A great nation must never forget its history."
Today, Semarang Tawang Station serves not only as a heritage landmark but also as one of Central Java's busiest transportation hubs. The station recorded more than 3.86 million passenger movements in 2025, while the first half of 2026 alone has already reached 2.15 million passenger arrivals and departures, with an average of 34 train services operating every day.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin explained that the 330-day revitalization project carefully restored the station's original façade, main hall, east and west wings, as well as historical architectural ornaments based on archival photographs.
According to Bobby, the project reflects KAI's commitment to providing better railway services while preserving Indonesia's cultural heritage for future generations.
Located adjacent to Semarang's iconic Old Town district, Semarang Tawang Station also serves as the perfect gateway for travelers looking to explore the city's rich history and culture.
KAI currently manages more than 600 heritage buildings, with 120 sites undergoing revitalization and beautification programs, including Jakarta Kota Station, Tanjung Priok Station, and Bogor Station.
Blending history with modern comfort, the revitalized Semarang Tawang Station is ready to welcome travelers with an experience that celebrates Indonesia's heritage while embracing the future of rail transportation.
