KAI Sets New Requirements for Train Travel

Starting 22 October 2021, children under 12 years old are once again allowed to travel by train after previously being prohibited. This policy follows the issuance of the Ministry of Transportation Circular Letter Number 89 of 2021 concerning Guidelines for Domestic Travel by Rail Transportation During the Covid-19 Pandemic, dated 20 October 2021.

"Although children under 12 are now allowed to travel again, they must still comply with the applicable requirements, such as presenting a negative Covid-19 test result for Long-Distance Train passengers, wearing a mask properly, being in good health, and consistently following health protocols," said KAI VP Public Relations Joni Martinus.

Children under 12 years old traveling by train must also be accompanied by a parent or family member, as proven by a Family Card (Kartu Keluarga).

The complete travel requirements for train passengers are as follows:

1. Long-Distance Train and Local Train passengers must present a Covid-19 vaccination card showing at least the first dose.

  • Passengers under 12 years old are exempt from the vaccination card requirement.
  • Passengers with special health conditions or comorbidities that prevent them from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine must present a doctor's certificate from a government hospital stating that they have not yet received and/or are unable to receive the Covid-19 vaccination.

2. Long-Distance Train passengers must present either:

  • A negative RT-PCR test result taken no more than 2 x 24 hours before departure, or
  • A negative Rapid Test Antigen result taken no more than 1 x 24 hours before departure.

Starting 31 August 2021, Local Train passengers have been required to enter their National Identity Number (NIK) in the identity number field when booking tickets. For Long-Distance Train passengers, this requirement took effect on 26 October 2021.

The use of the National Identity Number (NIK) applies to both adult and child passengers as part of the government's initiative to implement NIK across all public service sectors. In addition, the NIK is used to validate passengers' vaccination status and Covid-19 test results, as KAI has integrated the PeduliLindungi application with its boarding system.

KAI also reminds passengers to continue complying with health protocols while using train services during the Covid-19 pandemic. Passengers are required to wear masks, wash their hands with soap and running water, maintain physical distancing, avoid crowds, reduce unnecessary travel, avoid dining together, and use hand sanitizer.

Passengers must be in good health, meaning they must not have flu symptoms, a cold, cough, loss of smell, diarrhea, or fever, and their body temperature must not exceed 37.3 degrees Celsius.

Passengers are required to wear a three-layer cloth mask or a medical mask that fully covers the nose and mouth. They are also not permitted to engage in one-way or two-way conversations, either by phone or in person, throughout the journey. Eating and drinking are not permitted during trips lasting less than two hours, except for individuals who must consume medication for medical reasons where not doing so could endanger their health and safety.

Joni emphasized that KAI continues to ensure that all passengers strictly comply with health protocols and that only passengers who meet all travel requirements are allowed to board the train.

"KAI always complies with government regulations to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 through railway transportation," Joni concluded.
