PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) officially launched a new train service, the Airlangga Train, operating on the Pasar Senen–Surabaya Pasar Turi round-trip route on Friday, 1 October 2021, at Pasar Senen Station. The inauguration was attended by KAI Director of Human Resources and General Affairs Agung Yunanto together with the Director of Railway Traffic and Transportation of the Directorate General of Railways, Ministry of Transportation, Danto Restyawan.

The Airlangga Train is operated based on an assignment from the Ministry of Transportation to KAI through Letter No. KA.005/1/25/K2/DJKA/2021 dated 28 September 2021 regarding the operation of the Airlangga Train as a Public Service Obligation (PSO) train.

KAI Director of Human Resources and General Affairs Agung Yunanto said that the launch of the Airlangga Train reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Transportation and KAI to improve customer service while continuing to implement strict health protocols, supported by personnel who have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

The inaugural operation of the Airlangga Train also took place during the celebration of KAI’s 76th anniversary, which was commemorated on 28 September 2021. KAI remains committed to serving customers faster and better to provide greater value.

“The Airlangga Train is operated to encourage more people to return to railway transportation, helping accelerate the recovery of the national economy. We are proud to be entrusted by the Director of Railway Traffic and Transportation to operate the Airlangga PSO Train as part of the government's strategic role through the Directorate General of Railways,” said Agung Yunanto.

Director of Railway Traffic and Transportation at the Directorate General of Railways, Ministry of Transportation, Danto Restyawan, said that the Airlangga Train represents the government's commitment, through the Ministry of Transportation, to provide affordable, reliable, safe, and comfortable transportation services for the public.

“As part of improving PSO railway services, today we officially operate the Airlangga Train serving the Pasar Senen–Surabaya Pasar Turi route. The Airlangga Train is here to provide the public with another travel option,” said Danto Restyawan.

The name "Airlangga" is inspired by King Airlangga, the founder of the Kahuripan Kingdom in East Java, who ruled during the 11th century. Toward the end of his reign, the kingdom was divided into the Kingdom of Kadiri and the Kingdom of Janggala for his two sons.

The Airlangga Train fare is Rp49,000 for travel distances between 0 and 290 km, and Rp104,000 for distances exceeding 290 km. Tickets are available through the KAI Access application, the KAI website, station ticket counters, and all other official sales channels.

The Airlangga Train departs from Pasar Senen Station at 11:30 and arrives at Surabaya Pasar Turi Station at 23:00. From Surabaya Pasar Turi Station, the train departs at 12:25 and arrives at Pasar Senen Station at 00:10.

The Airlangga Train consists of eight Economy Class coaches with a total seating capacity of 848 passengers. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Long-Distance Trains were limited to a maximum capacity of 70% in accordance with Ministry of Transportation Circular Letter No. 14 of 2020. Therefore, the Airlangga Train operated with a capacity of 74 seats per coach, or a total of 592 seats.

As a Long-Distance Train service, all passengers traveling on the Airlangga Train are required to have received at least the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and present either a negative RT-PCR test result taken within a maximum of 2×24 hours before departure or a negative Rapid Test Antigen result taken within a maximum of 1×24 hours before departure. KAI provides Rapid Test Antigen services at 64 stations for Rp45,000.

Passengers with special medical conditions or comorbidities that prevent them from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine must present a medical certificate issued by a government hospital stating that they have not yet received or are unable to receive the Covid-19 vaccination.

In addition, passengers under the age of 12 were still not permitted to travel by train.

Passengers must be in good health, with no symptoms such as flu, runny nose, cough, loss of smell, diarrhea, or fever, and must have a body temperature below 37.3 degrees Celsius. Passengers are required to wear a three-layer cloth mask or a medical mask covering the nose and mouth. They are also not allowed to engage in one-way or two-way conversations, either by phone or in person, throughout the journey.
