KAI and INKA Join Forces to Shape the Future of Indonesia's Railway Industry
Indonesia's railway industry is entering an exciting new chapter. A strategic collaboration between KAI Group and PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero) (INKA) is set to unlock new opportunities for delivering smarter, more efficient, and fully integrated railway solutions across the country.
The initiative officially began with the KAI–INKA Integration Kick-Off, held at the Jakarta Railway Center on Tuesday (July 21, 2026). The event marked the first step in bringing together operational excellence and manufacturing expertise to strengthen Indonesia's railway ecosystem and accelerate future innovation.
According to Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, the integration will be implemented gradually through comprehensive capability mapping, governance alignment, and strategic planning. Throughout the process, safety, reliability, product quality, and customer satisfaction will remain the company's top priorities.
"We aim to build a more connected railway ecosystem. This integration is an opportunity to deliver better services while strengthening Indonesia's national railway industry," Anne said.
The collaboration is backed by KAI Group's extensive operational experience. During the first half of 2026, the company served nearly 259 million passengers, supported by 627 railway stations, 7,765 kilometers of active rail tracks, and more than 12,800 railway assets operating across Indonesia.
This strong operational foundation provides valuable expertise for developing integrated railway services, ranging from train operations and rolling stock maintenance to digital technology, spare parts management, and customer service enhancement.
The partnership also opens the door to future innovations in train design, manufacturing, signaling systems, maintenance technology, and spare parts availability. By combining operational insights with manufacturing capabilities, KAI Group and INKA are expected to accelerate the development of a stronger and more competitive railway industry.
The collaboration is further strengthened by the expertise of KAI Group's subsidiaries, which operate across airport rail services, commuter transportation, logistics, railway tourism, infrastructure development, and facility management. Together, these capabilities create a comprehensive railway ecosystem capable of delivering end-to-end transportation solutions for customers and business partners alike.
Looking ahead, the integration is expected to create broader opportunities beyond passenger transportation. Regional governments, industrial estates, transportation operators, and business partners will benefit from comprehensive railway solutions through various business-to-business (B2B) services.
As part of its long-term vision, KAI also shared an initial projection for approximately 156 new Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trainsets by 2040. The projection reflects the growing potential of Indonesia's railway industry, while future procurement will continue to align with operational needs, production readiness, funding availability, and government policies.
More than a corporate integration, this collaboration represents a strategic step toward building a smarter, more innovative, and sustainable railway ecosystem. Through this partnership, KAI Group remains committed to delivering safer, more reliable, and more comfortable railway services while supporting the long-term growth of Indonesia's railway industry.
