More Comfortable Journeys, A Greener Planet! KAI Introduces 124 Water Stations Across 58 Stations
Traveling by train is now not only more comfortable but also more sustainable. As of June 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) has installed 124 Water Stations across 58 railway stations, covering 70 passenger service areas, allowing travelers to refill their reusable bottles free of charge.
The initiative comes as rail travel continues to grow in popularity. During the first half of 2026, KAI's Long-Distance and Local Train services served 29,858,267 passengers, an 8.72% increase compared with 27,463,555 passengers during the same period in 2025.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the growing number of passengers should be accompanied by facilities that make travel more convenient while encouraging more sustainable habits.
Nearly 30 million passengers traveled with KAI during the first half of 2026. Amid this growing mobility, Water Stations provide a simple yet meaningful convenience, allowing customers to refill their bottles before boarding or continuing their journeys.
Besides providing free drinking water, the Water Station program also encourages customers to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic bottles.
Based on a conservative estimate, if 10% of passengers use a Water Station just once during the first half of 2026, KAI could help prevent the use of approximately 2.99 million single-use plastic bottles within six months.
The estimate assumes that each refill replaces one 600 ml bottled water purchase, representing a potential refill volume of around 1.79 million liters of drinking water.
Anne emphasized that the figure represents a potential environmental impact rather than actual recorded usage.
One refill may seem like a small action, but when millions of passengers do it together, the environmental impact becomes significant. Small everyday habits can create meaningful change.
Today, the 124 Water Stations are available at many major railway stations across Indonesia. Gambir and Pasarsenen stations each feature eight units across four service areas, Malang Station has six units in three locations, while Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasarturi each provide five units.
Passengers can also find Water Stations at Bekasi, Jatinegara, Cikampek, Sukabumi, Bandung, Kiaracondong, Cirebon, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng, Semarang Poncol, Purwokerto, Yogyakarta, Solo Balapan, Madiun, Kediri, Jember, Medan, Kertapati, Tanjungkarang, and many other stations.
Water Stations are placed based on each station's passenger characteristics and service needs. At busier stations, multiple refill points are provided to ensure easy access for travelers.
KAI also ensures that every Water Station provides safe, high-quality drinking water. The water has been tested by the Water Quality Laboratory operated by Coway International Indonesia in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), meeting all applicable drinking water quality standards.
Published test results show that the water complies with 20 out of 20 quality parameters, covering microbiological, physical, and chemical standards.
Passengers can confidently use the facilities because the water quality has been thoroughly tested. Routine maintenance and regular inspections are also carried out to maintain safety and hygiene.
Whether traveling with family, commuting to work, accompanying children, or taking long-distance journeys, passengers have different hydration needs. Water Stations provide a practical solution to help everyone stay refreshed throughout their trip.
Sometimes, customer care comes through simple things. Parents can refill their children's bottles, elderly passengers can easily take their medication, and long-distance travelers can stay properly hydrated throughout their journey.
KAI also encourages passengers to bring reusable bottles, refill responsibly, keep the facilities clean, and join the movement to reduce single-use plastic waste.
A refreshing drink before departure can make every journey even more enjoyable. By bringing a reusable bottle, every passenger can help create a greener and more sustainable travel experience.
