KAI Prepares Rp1.23 Trillion in Spare Parts to Keep Trains Ready to Run
Behind every smooth and comfortable train journey, there is a long list of things that need to be ready. One of them is the availability of spare parts and materials to support the maintenance of railway rolling stock and infrastructure.
As of June 30, 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) managed spare parts and material inventory with a net value of Rp1.23 trillion. This included Rp1.12 trillion in rolling stock spare parts and Rp224.73 billion in infrastructure spare parts before impairment allowances.
This inventory plays an important role in keeping KAI's operations ready. As of June 2026, KAI managed 12,856 rolling stock units, consisting of 551 locomotives, 1,064 electric multiple units, 2,238 passenger cars, 8,907 freight cars, and 96 diesel-electric railcars and generator units.
So, while passengers see trains arriving and departing from the platform, there is a much bigger maintenance process happening behind the scenes. Every unit requires spare parts, technical expertise, maintenance facilities, and carefully planned schedules to keep it ready for service.
Rolling stock spare parts are used for routine and periodic maintenance of various types of equipment, including locomotives, passenger cars, generator cars, diesel trains, electric trains, and freight cars. These maintenance activities are carried out at KAI's maintenance facilities and depots across its Operational Areas and Regional Divisions.
But keeping trains ready is only one part of the equation. The infrastructure supporting every journey also needs to stay in top condition. Infrastructure spare parts are used to maintain railway tracks, bridges, level crossings, signaling systems, electrical installations, and communication systems. As of June 2026, the value of infrastructure spare parts stood at Rp224.73 billion.
KAI is also taking a data-driven, life-cycle approach to asset management. This allows maintenance and replacement decisions to be made based on the actual condition and risk level of each asset, helping ensure that materials and resources are used where they are needed most.
For KAI, reliable train operations start long before a train enters the tracks. Preparation begins with making sure the right spare parts are available when needed, rolling stock receives regular maintenance, and railway infrastructure remains ready to support every journey.
With the support of well-managed materials, skilled technical teams, maintenance facilities, depots, and structured maintenance programs, KAI continues to keep thousands of rolling stock units and railway infrastructure ready for service.
In other words, behind every train that keeps moving smoothly, there is a dedicated maintenance process working every day to make sure the journey stays on track.
