Every safe and comfortable train journey begins long before a train leaves the station. Behind the scenes at Cirebon Prujakan Mechanical Workshop, the sound of lathes, welding equipment, hydraulic testing, and precision inspections fills the workshop as skilled technicians prepare track maintenance machines to keep railway operations across Java running at their best.

Located beside Cirebon Prujakan Station in West Java, the facility serves as PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero)'s main maintenance center for railway track maintenance equipment. From scheduled servicing and major overhauls to functional testing and technical upgrades, every process is designed to ensure each machine is ready to support safe, reliable, and efficient railway infrastructure.

Known internally as Railway Track Maintenance Machines (KPJR), these specialized units play a vital role in maintaining track quality. They lift and align rails, compact ballast, reshape track profiles, stabilize railway structures after maintenance, and help keep track geometry within operational standards. Their work is essential in ensuring smooth, safe, and reliable train operations throughout Java.

In 2026, the workshop is responsible for maintaining 51 track maintenance machines. As of 17 July 2026, 22 units (43.1%) have completed maintenance, seven units are currently undergoing servicing, while the remaining 22 machines are scheduled for upcoming maintenance cycles.

Each machine serves a unique purpose. Multiple Tie Tampers (MTT) lift, align, and compact railway tracks, while Plasser Ballast Regulators (PBR) shape and organize ballast around sleepers to maintain track stability. Other specialized equipment focuses on railway turnouts (switches), ensuring trains can safely transition between different tracks.

Once maintenance is completed, these machines are deployed across Daop 1 Jakarta, Daop 2 Bandung, Daop 3 Cirebon, Daop 4 Semarang, Daop 5 Purwokerto, Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Daop 7 Madiun, Daop 8 Surabaya, and Daop 9 Jember, making Cirebon Prujakan one of the key pillars supporting railway infrastructure maintenance throughout Java.

The workshop has consistently demonstrated strong performance. It completed 50 maintenance projects in 2024, increased to 53 projects in 2025, and had already finished 22 projects by mid-July 2026, bringing the total to 125 completed maintenance projects over the past two and a half years.

Maintenance follows structured cycles known as P12, P24, and P48, depending on each machine's operating hours, age, condition, and maintenance history. Every project includes comprehensive inspections of mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical components, braking systems, drive mechanisms, and operational equipment to ensure optimal performance.

The workshop also handles machines from multiple generations, with production years ranging from 1984 to 2024. The diverse fleet requires technicians to master both conventional mechanical systems and the latest electronic control technologies, demonstrating the team's broad technical expertise.

Supporting these operations are 48 dedicated professionals, including permanent employees, maintenance specialists, cleaning staff, and security personnel. Their responsibilities cover the entire maintenance process—from planning and dismantling components to inspection, repairs, reassembly, functional testing, and final quality assurance before every machine returns to service.

Continuous learning remains a priority. Employees receive training and certification in occupational safety, hazardous material handling, firefighting, first aid, wastewater treatment, and environmental management. Many technicians are also certified to operate overhead cranes, forklifts, lifting jacks, and other heavy industrial equipment used throughout the maintenance process.

To support this work, the workshop is equipped with modern facilities including overhead cranes, lathes, milling machines, hydraulic presses, forklifts, scissor lifts, nitrogen accumulator charging systems, high-pressure washers, and power generators, enabling efficient, accurate, and high-quality maintenance.

Quality and sustainability go hand in hand at the facility. Cirebon Prujakan Mechanical Workshop operates under ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management standards while implementing wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, tree planting, green area revitalization, and hydroponic programs to support sustainable operations.

As of April 2026, the workshop has also achieved an outstanding safety record with zero workplace accidents, zero environmental incidents, and zero maintenance delays. These achievements reflect KAI's commitment to ensuring that every train journey across Java is supported by reliable infrastructure, highly skilled professionals, and carefully maintained maintenance equipment—working behind the scenes to keep millions of passengers traveling safely every day.
