As Indonesia’s state-owned railway transportation company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is committed to providing the best possible service to its customers. One of the key ways KAI fulfills this commitment is by consistently placing railway safety and security as its highest priority. In the transportation industry, safety is the foundation of every operation. Therefore, KAI continuously implements various measures to achieve zero accidents in railway operations.

To realize zero accidents in train operations, both internal and external factors must be closely monitored to mitigate potential risks. These include unreliable rolling stock, substandard railway infrastructure, human error, unpredictable natural conditions, and deliberate acts by irresponsible individuals that could endanger train operations.

To minimize risks related to railway facilities and infrastructure, KAI has established routine inspection procedures that must be carried out at regular intervals to ensure the operational readiness of both infrastructure and rolling stock. Detailed track inspections conducted on foot, as well as bordes-ride and locomotive ride inspections, are routinely performed to verify the readiness of railway assets in supporting safe train operations. From the human resources perspective, KAI also continuously enhances employee competence and discipline through education and training programs, technical training, workshops, focus group discussions (FGDs), and railway personnel certification conducted by authorized institutions.

Risks to railway operations are not only caused by rolling stock, infrastructure, or human error. Several external factors also contribute to railway accidents, including public negligence at level crossings, theft of railway assets, illegal buildings near railway tracks, and vandalism such as throwing objects at train windows. In addition, natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods also have the potential to disrupt railway operations.

To reduce these external risks, KAI regularly conducts railway safety awareness campaigns for the public, maps areas prone to natural disasters and locations vulnerable to acts that could endanger train operations, and coordinates and collaborates with relevant stakeholders to minimize and prevent activities that may threaten railway safety.

"Every railway employee plays an important role in ensuring safety. Therefore, everyone must ensure that every action complies with established procedures, adheres to all applicable regulations, and remains committed to working diligently while collaborating to create safe railway operations," said KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo.

KAI promotes a strong safety culture throughout the company by consistently implementing five key safety principles: complying with work procedures, conducting pre-work briefings, always using personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining awareness of the work environment, and reporting any potential hazards or dangerous incidents.

To support the implementation of these five safety principles, KAI has developed a hazard reporting application called Safety Railway Information (SRI). Through this application, every KAI employee can report potential hazards encountered during operations. In addition, the application provides employees with safety-related information and weather forecasts across KAI's operational areas. Every employee is required to report hazards related to railway operational safety, occupational health and safety, and environmental safety, including both unsafe actions and unsafe conditions that could endanger train operations. Besides the SRI application, hazard reports can also be submitted through KAI's accident prevention contact center.

All hazard reports submitted through the SRI application are followed up by the team within KAI's Directorate of Safety and Security. The reports are then forwarded to the relevant units for monitoring, corrective action, and preventive measures.

KAI firmly believes that the safety of both passengers and railway personnel is its highest priority. Therefore, achieving zero accidents in railway operations is a non-negotiable commitment. KAI will continue to improve every aspect of its operations to ensure that train services remain safe, reliable, well-controlled, healthy, and, above all, secure for everyone. (Public Relations KAI)
