Explore East Java More Easily with the Ijen Express, a Journey Full of Scenery
Traveling to eastern Java has become easier with the arrival of the Ijen Express Train, which connects Malang and Ketapang (Banyuwangi) round-trip. Since its inception on February 1, 2025, this service has become a popular choice for both leisure and intercity travel.
Customer enthusiasm for the Ijen Express Train continues to grow. From January to March 2026, 56,105 customers used this service, an increase compared to the 22,352 customers in the same period in 2025. This increase reflects the growing need for travel, especially for efficient and comfortable travel options.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications Anne Purba stated that the presence of the Ijen Express Train expands access to eastern Java, which boasts diverse tourism potential.
"The train offers a more convenient and comfortable journey, while also providing customers with the opportunity to experience firsthand the character of the region they traverse," said Anne.
The Ijen Express Train journey begins in Malang, with its mountainous landscape and cool air. The line then heads north towards Pasuruan and Probolinggo, offering views of rice paddies and distant mountains in clear weather.
Entering Jember, the atmosphere changes to a more tranquil plantation and rural area. Community activities can be seen near the railway line, presenting a picture of daily life coexisting with rail transportation.
The journey continues towards Banyuwangi, with the route becoming dominated by forests and hills. The dynamic contours of this section provide a different travel experience than the previous sections.
Approaching Ketapang Station, passengers enter the eastern tip of Java, a gateway to various prime destinations such as the Ijen Crater, Baluran National Park, and the beaches of Banyuwangi.
The presence of the Ijen Express train facilitates travel for tourists while opening up economic access for communities along the route. This connected journey encourages tourism, local businesses, and increasingly efficient inter-regional mobility.
The choice of morning and evening departure schedules provides flexibility for customers in planning their trip, allowing them to enjoy the scenery along the route or rest during the journey.
For easier travel planning, Ijen Express train tickets can be booked through the Access by KAI app. Customers can view schedules, select seats, and conveniently organize their trips.
"Connectivity built through trains benefits the community. Travel becomes more efficient, destinations become easier to reach, and activities in various regions are also moving," concluded Anne.
