Steel structure installation has begun as KAI continues upgrading the Karet–Sudirman Baru area. Following the transfer of KRL commuter train services from Karet Station to Sudirman Baru Station on September 1, 2026, the work focuses on improving passenger movement and access to connecting public transport.

Several sections of the substructure have been completed, with steel structures now being installed at a number of locations. The work forms part of the supporting facilities planned to improve access around Karet and Sudirman Baru following the service transfer.

Passenger activity figures also reflect the change in service locations. Before the transfer, Karet Station recorded 4,909,334 entry and exit gate activities from January to August 2026. Sudirman Baru Station recorded 2,439,757 activities from January to September 2026.

As the figures cover different periods, they cannot be used to directly compare activity growth at the two stations. However, in September, entry and exit activities through KRL gates at Sudirman Baru reached 646,411, up from 190,060 in August. This shift is consistent with the transfer of services from Karet, which changed the station where passenger activities were recorded.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that changes in travel patterns need to be accompanied by improved access. The upgrades aim to make it easier for passengers to move around Karet–Sudirman Baru and connect with other modes of public transport.

The planned facilities include one 20-metre horizontal travelator and two vertical travelators. The project also covers pedestrian corridors and landscaping, a drop-off area for passengers arriving by connecting transport, access escalators, and covered walkways.

The area improvement works are scheduled to continue until December 31, 2026. KAI is overseeing construction in stages, taking passenger needs and site conditions into account. The facilities will be checked to ensure they are ready before being opened for use.

The upgrades form part of KAI’s efforts to adapt facilities following the KRL service transfer. KAI continues to monitor construction and adjust access arrangements to meet mobility needs in the area, with the aim of providing passengers with better-organised connections to other public transport services.
