Discover the Beauty of Priangan Through Your Train Window!
A train journey can be a fun way to enjoy a change of scenery, even before reaching your destination. As the train leaves the busy city behind, the landscape gradually transforms into stretches of rice fields, rolling hills, flowing rivers, and villages nestled at the foot of the mountains. For anyone looking to spend the weekend somewhere different, a journey through the Priangan region of West Java offers a refreshing travel experience.
These distinctive landscapes can be enjoyed aboard several services operated by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) that travel through West Java. From January to September 2026, KA Cikuray, KA Papandayan, and KA Pangandaran collectively served 1,117,029 passengers. This represents a 6.92% increase from 1,044,689 passengers during the same period in 2025.
According to KAI data, the three services recorded the following passenger growth:
1. KA Cikuray on the Garut–Pasarsenen round-trip route served 478,266 passengers, up 4.92% from 455,823 passengers in 2025.
2. KA Papandayan on the Garut–Gambir round-trip route served 340,338 passengers, up 12.91% from 301,432 passengers during the same period in 2025.
3. KA Pangandaran on the Banjar–Gambir round-trip route served 298,425 passengers, up 3.82% from 287,434 passengers in 2025.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that the Priangan region offers a distinctive travel experience, with a blend of urban scenery, rolling hills, and agricultural landscapes. The changing views along the railway lines create a different atmosphere for passengers looking to enjoy a refreshing journey. She noted that rice fields, distant hills, and villages along the route can make a weekend trip more enjoyable while giving passengers the opportunity to discover places they may not have visited before.
Traveling to Garut is one way to experience the natural beauty of Priangan. Along the route, passengers can enjoy views of the mountains and surrounding agricultural landscapes. Once in Garut, the journey can continue to a variety of tourist destinations, including the Cipanas area, Situ Bagendit, and Mount Papandayan. From enjoying the cool mountain air to sampling traditional Sundanese cuisine, Garut offers plenty of ways to make the most of a getaway.
Another option is KA Pangandaran, which travels through Bandung, Tasikmalaya, and Banjar. Along the way, urban landscapes gradually give way to agricultural areas and rolling hills. From Banjar, passengers can continue their journey by road to various destinations in Pangandaran, including its beaches and Pananjung Nature Reserve. Travelers can plan their onward journey according to their schedules and preferred connecting transportation.
Anne added that the passenger growth recorded by KA Cikuray, KA Papandayan, and KA Pangandaran reflects the diverse travel needs of the public, ranging from work and education to family visits and holidays. For travel enthusiasts, the natural scenery along the railway lines offers an added attraction that can be enjoyed well before arriving at the destination.
According to Anne, memorable travel experiences do not always begin upon arrival. Views through the train window, cityscapes gradually giving way to rural surroundings, and the natural beauty along the railway lines can all become part of the journey itself. With Indonesia's rich landscapes and the stories found in every region, KAI aims to give more people the opportunity to enjoy intercity train travel safely and comfortably.
Looking for a different kind of getaway? Traveling through Priangan by train is a great way to discover new scenery and enjoy memorable moments along the way. Plan your trip, take in the views from your window, and let the beauty of West Java become part of your next travel adventure.
