The Spirit of Independence Moves Forward with Railways, 1.08 Million Passengers Enjoy Special Fares
The spirit of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia was reflected in the journeys of people traveling by train. On August 17, 2026, a total of 1,084,699 people benefited from KAI Group’s special fare programs across long-distance train services, Commuter Line, and LRT Jabodebek.
The total consisted of 31,634 seats on commercial economy-class long-distance trains sold with a 17% discount, 969,648 Commuter Line passengers who benefited from the Rp8 fare, and 83,417 LRT Jabodebek passengers who enjoyed the same special fare.
The Independence Day period showed two different travel patterns. Intercity mobility increased during the holiday period, while travel on urban services tended to be lower than on regular working days. Amid these changing travel patterns, services for the public continued across KAI Group’s various services.
On long-distance train services, a 17% discount was offered for commercial economy-class travel with departures specifically on August 17, 2026. A total of 31,634 seats were sold through the program. Based on departure regions, the highest number of passengers was recorded in Daop 4 Semarang with 8,430 passengers, followed by Daop 1 Jakarta with 8,187 passengers.
The Independence Day celebration was also reflected in urban travel. The special Rp8 fare on most Commuter Line services was used by 969,648 passengers. This included 777,051 passengers on Commuter Line Jabodetabek, 29,645 passengers on Commuter Line Region VI Yogyakarta, 16,958 passengers on Commuter Line Region I Banten Merak Regular, 92 passengers on the Farmers and Traders Train in Region I Banten, 83,180 passengers on Commuter Line Region II Bandung, 3,247 passengers on Commuter Line Prameks in Region VI Yogyakarta, and 59,475 passengers on Commuter Line Region VIII Surabaya.
On LRT Jabodebek, the Rp8 fare was used by 83,417 passengers. Overall, Commuter Line and LRT Jabodebek served 1,053,065 passengers under the special fare program during the August 17 Independence Day period.
Holiday travel patterns are part of the dynamics of public transportation. When regular office and education activities decrease, travel volumes on urban services can adjust accordingly. At the same time, intercity travel receives a boost from people who use the holiday period to travel.
Behind every travel figure, services remain focused on safety, service punctuality, comfort, and the readiness of personnel from the beginning of the journey until passengers reach their destinations.
This spirit is in line with the theme of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, “Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.” KAI reflects this through the role of public transportation in continuing to connect people with their families, work, economic activities, education, and tourist destinations across different regions.
Amid the Independence Day celebrations, thousands of KAI Group personnel continued carrying out their duties at stations, onboard trains, in train operation control centers, across railway facilities and infrastructure, and at various service points. While many people enjoyed the public holiday, railway services continued to operate to ensure that every journey remained well maintained.
The spirit of Independence remains an energy that drives everyone forward together. As trains continue to take people to their destinations, KAI Group personnel continue to safeguard every journey with discipline, care, and a spirit of service for Indonesia.
