For people who travel every day for work, education, business, or simply to stay connected with family and communities, transportation costs are an important part of everyday spending. Amid diverse mobility needs, public transportation offers an option that helps people travel comfortably while keeping their expenses easier to manage.

Through intercity, local, and urban railway services with a variety of fare options, KAI Group continues to provide travel alternatives that can be tailored to distance, individual needs, and the mobility patterns of the community.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said affordable public transportation is not only about ticket prices, but also about helping people plan their everyday travel expenses more effectively.

When people have access to affordable mass transportation, their travel expenses become easier to plan. Public transportation gives people more room to manage their mobility spending while staying connected to workplaces, educational institutions, commercial areas, and other activities.

One of these options is Commuter Line Jabodetabek. With distance-based fares, passengers can use the rail-based mass transportation system to travel from surrounding areas to various activity centers across Jabodetabek at relatively affordable costs.

The current Commuter Line Jabodetabek fare is Rp3,000 for the first 25 kilometers, followed by an additional Rp1,000 for every subsequent 10 kilometers. This fare structure allows passengers to adjust their journeys according to their everyday mobility needs.

Flexible fare options are also available through LRT Jabodebek. Fares start from Rp5,000 based on travel distance. On weekdays during peak hours, the maximum fare is Rp20,000. Meanwhile, during off-peak hours, as well as on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays, the maximum fare is Rp10,000.

With fares determined by both distance and travel time, passengers have more flexibility to plan when they travel based on their individual needs and daily routines.

Affordable mobility is also available beyond urban services through economy-class railway services supported by the Government’s Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme. Through this scheme, passengers can access railway services at fares determined by the Government.

The current PSO economy-class railway fare policy refers to Minister of Transportation Decree No. KM 165 of 2024 concerning Passenger Fares for Railway Transportation in Implementing Public Service Obligations.

Anne explained that having a variety of fare options is important because people have different travel needs. In metropolitan areas, for example, commuters need efficient fares for journeys they make repeatedly every day. Meanwhile, local and intercity travelers need fare options that can accommodate passengers with different levels of purchasing power.

KAI also provides greater flexibility through reduced fares for eligible passenger groups, including senior citizens and other groups in accordance with applicable policies.

From January to July 2026, a total of 1,267,255 passengers used reduced fares. During the same period, 3,080,830 passengers used special fares, while 138,897 passengers benefited from other discounts and promotional fares.

These figures highlight the diverse demand for travel pricing options. The more alternatives available, the more opportunities passengers have to choose a journey that best fits their needs.

Special fares serve a different purpose from PSO and reduced fares. KAI utilizes available seats on certain routes to offer passengers alternative pricing options.

This approach allows passengers to access special fares on selected journeys while also helping optimize available seating capacity. From January to July 2026, passengers using special fares accounted for approximately 9% of KAI’s Long-Distance and Local Railway passenger volume.

In addition to special and reduced fares, KAI also regularly introduces discount programs during selected periods and occasions. From January to July 2026, the total value of recorded fare discount programs reached approximately Rp242.96 billion.

This figure consisted of Rp55.3 billion in January, Rp96.7 billion in March, and Rp90.96 billion in June–July.

These programs are part of KAI’s efforts to give more people opportunities to travel while also optimizing capacity across available services and travel periods.

Fare options are important because every passenger has different travel needs and spending capabilities. Some people take the train every day to work, others travel between cities, while some rely on reduced fares. The more options available, the more room people have to manage their mobility expenses.

The growing range of services and fare options has gone hand in hand with increasing railway usage. From January to July 2026, KAI’s Long-Distance and Local Railway services served 35,257,646 passengers, an increase of 7.63% compared with 32,758,315 passengers during the same period in 2025.

Across the broader KAI Group ecosystem, the number of passengers reached 307,860,743 from January to July 2026. This represents an 8.32% increase compared with 284,202,884 passengers during the same period in 2025.

According to Anne, the economic benefits of public transportation go beyond the cost of a single ticket. When people can reach workplaces, schools, commercial centers, healthcare facilities, and other activity hubs with more manageable travel costs, they can also gain broader access to economic opportunities.

Affordable public transportation gives people more room to manage their travel expenses. KAI will continue strengthening its services so that more people have access to efficient, measurable, and needs-based mobility options.
