From Rail to Fields: KAI Strengthens Fertilizer Distribution to Support Food Security
Behind every successful harvest lies a reliable supply chain. As part of Indonesia's national logistics network, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to ensure fertilizers reach their destinations safely, on time, and efficiently, helping strengthen agricultural productivity and national food security.
From January to July 2026, KAI transported 13,920 tons of fertilizer, a 2.43% increase compared to the 13,590 tons carried during the same period last year. The achievement reflects KAI's ongoing commitment to supporting the smooth distribution of agricultural inputs across the country.
The strongest growth came in July 2026 alone, when fertilizer shipments reached 1,800 tons—five times higher than the 360 tons transported in July 2025. This represents an impressive year-on-year increase of 400%.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said timely fertilizer distribution plays a vital role in supporting agricultural productivity. When fertilizers are available at the right time and in the right quantities, farmers can better manage planting schedules and maintain crop yields.
Food security begins with a reliable supply chain. Through our fertilizer transportation services, KAI is committed to ensuring agricultural inputs are delivered safely, on schedule, and consistently to support farmers across Indonesia.
KAI's efforts complement the government's initiatives to strengthen the agricultural sector, including the allocation of 9.55 million tons of subsidized fertilizer in 2026 and the reduction of the Highest Retail Price (HET) for subsidized fertilizers to help lower farmers' production costs.
According to Anne, these initiatives require an efficient logistics system to maximize their impact. With its large carrying capacity, scheduled operations, and dependable service, rail transportation provides an effective solution for moving large volumes of fertilizer across Indonesia.
Strong collaboration among the government, state-owned enterprises, fertilizer producers, logistics providers, regional governments, and farming communities is essential to ensure fertilizers are available where and when they are needed. KAI is ready to support that collaboration through safe, reliable, and punctual logistics services.
Beyond fertilizer transportation, Indonesia's food security efforts are also supported by accelerated rice distribution through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program and government food assistance initiatives. Together, these measures help maintain food availability, stabilize prices, and protect household purchasing power.
For KAI, every fertilizer shipment represents more than moving cargo. It is part of a broader commitment to supporting farmers, strengthening agricultural productivity, and helping ensure a stable food supply for millions of Indonesian families.
We believe every fertilizer shipment transported by KAI contributes to sustaining Indonesia's food production. Every journey we operate today helps build a stronger and more resilient food system for the future.
