1.24 Million Discounted Tickets Sold as Train Travel Continues to Gain Momentum During the School Holidays
Traveling by train became even more affordable during Indonesia's 2026 school holiday, thanks to the Government's 30% rail fare discount program implemented through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) under the Ministry of Transportation. The initiative has encouraged more people to travel while improving access to education hubs, tourist destinations, metropolitan areas, and economic centers.
Public enthusiasm has exceeded expectations. As of 10:00 AM WIB on July 2, 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded 1,242,114 discounted tickets sold, representing 105.75% of the cumulative seat capacity of 1,174,624.
The occupancy rate exceeding 100% reflects cumulative seat utilization rather than overcapacity. Since passengers board and alight at different stations, a single seat can accommodate multiple travelers across different segments of the journey, allowing trains to maximize seating efficiency.
The 30% discount program remains available for travel through July 5, 2026, with ticket availability continuing to be updated through the Access by KAI mobile application.
According to KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba, the strong demand highlights how government transport incentives are making travel more accessible for families on vacation, students, and passengers heading to educational centers, tourist attractions, metropolitan regions, and business hubs.
The 30% transport discount enables people to plan their school holiday trips more affordably. The high cumulative occupancy also shows that train seats are being utilized efficiently, allowing more customers to benefit from the service.
The busiest travel day during the program was June 28, when 90,366 passengers used discounted tickets. It was followed by June 27 with 87,175 passengers, June 26 with 85,397, June 21 with 82,061, and June 29 with 81,890 passengers.
As of 9:00 AM WIB on July 2, total passenger volume for departures between June 20 and July 5 reached 3,164,814 travelers. Of these, 1,240,358 passengers used discounted tickets, accounting for 39.2% of all customers during the period.
The program has also outperformed last year's school holiday performance. Discounted ticket usage has already reached 106% of 2025 levels, while daily discounted passenger numbers consistently exceeded last year's figures, with the highest increase recorded on June 28, reaching 124% of the comparable 2025 period.
Jakarta's Pasar Senen Station recorded the highest departure volume with 134,988 passengers, followed by Yogyakarta, Semarang Poncol, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng, and Surabaya Pasarturi stations. Pasar Senen also ranked as the busiest arrival station during the period.
The most popular travel corridors connected Jakarta with Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya. The Lempuyangan–Pasar Senen route topped the list with 17,718 passengers, followed by Pasar Senen–Lempuyangan, Surabaya Gubeng–Yogyakarta, Pasar Senen–Yogyakarta, and Solo Balapan–Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng.
Regional and medium-distance train services also experienced strong demand. The five busiest services were Joglosemarkerto, Ambarawa Ekspres, Pangrango, Kaligung, and Kamandaka, reflecting the growing role of rail transport in supporting tourism, education, family visits, and regional economic activity.
KAI sincerely appreciates the public's trust in choosing rail transport during the school holiday season. Together with the Government and DJKA, we remain committed to providing safe, comfortable, convenient, and affordable travel experiences for everyone.
