Moving Toward the Future, KAI Prepares for Railway Development in Bali

KAI, the Bali Provincial Government, and the Badung Regency Government are taking the first steps toward the future of transportation in Bali. On September 1, 2026, the three parties officially signed a Joint Agreement on the Development Plan for Railway Infrastructure in Bali.

The agreement marks an important starting point in exploring the potential and requirements for a railway system that could support public mobility and Bali's long-term regional development.

The agreement was signed by KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin, Bali Governor Wayan Koster, and Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa. Through this collaboration, KAI and the regional governments will conduct studies and coordinate preparations for the potential development of railways across Bali.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that economic growth, the continued expansion of tourism, and increasing public mobility are important factors in shaping Bali's future transportation needs.

Bali continues to demonstrate strong economic and tourism activity. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Bali Province, the province's economy grew by 5.78% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026. During the same period, Bali's gross regional domestic product at current prices reached IDR 89.27 trillion, with accommodation and food services among its largest contributing sectors.

This growth has been accompanied by significant levels of mobility. In June 2026, Bali welcomed more than 605,000 international visitors arriving directly in the province, representing an increase from the previous month.

Air travel also continued to show strong demand, with more than 650,000 passengers departing Bali on international flights and nearly 330,000 travelling on domestic flights during the same month.

According to Bobby, Bali's position as one of Indonesia's leading tourism destinations requires transportation planning that can connect key activity centres, tourism destinations, and existing modes of transport.

Through the agreement, KAI, the Bali Provincial Government, and the Badung Regency Government will conduct data and information inventories, prepare feasibility studies and Detailed Engineering Designs (DED), and explore opportunities for multimodal integration. The collaboration will also include human resource development and coordination with government institutions, businesses, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Joint Agreement will remain valid for five years and may be followed by further cooperation agreements based on the respective authority of each party.

Bobby added that KAI is ready to bring its railway expertise and experience into every stage of the joint study. Through careful planning and collaboration, the initiative is expected to support a transportation system that can deliver long-term benefits for public mobility and Bali's future development.
