A total of 20.581 railway sleepers have been maintained throughout 2026 to date as part of efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of train operations. This achievement comprises 17,025 concrete sleepers and 3,556 synthetic sleepers across various operational regions of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero).

This year, the concrete sleeper maintenance program targets 61,924 units, with implementation reaching approximately 27.49 percent. Meanwhile, the synthetic sleeper maintenance program targets 16.839 units, with 3,556 units completed, equivalent to approximately 21.12 percent.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said sleeper condition is one of the aspects monitored in track maintenance because sleepers help maintain rail position and stability as trains pass over them.

Infrastructure maintenance is carried out according to plan based on track condition inspections. Sleepers that meet the required standards help maintain track geometry and stability, allowing train journeys to operate safely and reliably.

For concrete sleepers, one of the largest programs in 2026 is in Regional Division IV Tanjungkarang, with a target of 18.321 units. To date, 9.390 units have been maintained, representing approximately 51.25 percent of the program in that region.

Work is carried out in stages, taking into account material conditions, train traffic intensity, track inspection results, and the needs of each railway section. Work schedules are also arranged to ensure that maintenance can proceed while maintaining the smooth operation of train services.

Anne emphasized that travel safety depends greatly on the readiness of all infrastructure components. Therefore, inspections and maintenance are conducted regularly to ensure that track conditions continue to meet operational standards and that potential disruptions can be minimized from the outset.

Infrastructure maintenance also supports consistent train punctuality. In September 2026, passenger train departure punctuality reached 99.71 percent, while arrival punctuality reached 97.45 percent. For freight trains, departure punctuality stood at 95.68 percent and arrival punctuality at 87.15 percent.

KAI routinely allocates dedicated work periods for track maintenance, either through track closures or by using gaps between train services. In September 2026, these activities were carried out across various Operational Areas in Java as part of regular infrastructure maintenance work.

Anne added that sleepers are among the various track components monitored regularly, alongside rails, switches, bridges, and other supporting facilities.

Track maintenance is carried out every day. These efforts aim to ensure that infrastructure remains in proper and safe condition so that passenger journeys and freight transportation can operate safely, reliably, and on time.
