Ride the Rails, Explore Indonesia: Nusantara Explorer Brings a Premium Travel Experience on Board
Exploring Indonesia can now be enjoyed in a more distinctive way. Nusantara Explorer has officially been introduced as a premium tourism train that combines rail travel with Indonesia’s natural landscapes, culture, local hospitality, and local wisdom. The train was launched during the peak celebration of KAI’s 81st Anniversary, The Continuum – Timeless Transformation, at Ciputra Artpreneur Jakarta on Monday (September 28).
More than simply a means of transportation, Nusantara Explorer is designed as a space to experience Indonesia throughout the journey. Every detail is created to connect passengers with the country’s landscapes, culture, and distinctive hospitality in a comfortable and premium setting.
Developed by KAI personnel at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, the train was created around the concept of combining Indonesia’s tourism potential with the experience of traveling by rail. Its development went through several stages of refinement to create a journey that is not only comfortable but also rich in stories.
Nusantara Explorer features several areas with distinct characteristics, including Signature Class, Advanced Class, Compact Class, Lounge, Grand Restaurant, and Kitchen & Crew. The combination offers passengers different ways to enjoy the journey, whether they prefer a private experience or a more relaxed atmosphere while taking in the scenery.
Signature Class and Advanced Class provide private spaces for a premium travel experience. Meanwhile, the Lounge and Grand Restaurant offer more open areas for passengers to relax, enjoy meals, and experience the journey in a more dynamic atmosphere.
A single Nusantara Explorer trainset can accommodate up to 91 passengers, consisting of 36 passengers in the private room area and 55 passengers in the Lounge and Grand Restaurant areas.
Beyond its design and facilities, comfort remains a key part of the development. Various improvements were made based on feedback, including enhancements to air circulation, communication and internet connectivity, as well as supporting travel facilities.
Nusantara Explorer also serves as a new way to showcase Indonesia through the travel experience itself. Landscapes along the railway route, the culture of different regions, and Indonesia’s renowned hospitality all become part of the story passengers can enjoy throughout their journey.
The concept turns the journey itself into part of the destination. Passengers do not simply travel from one place to another, but can also experience Indonesia’s scenery and atmosphere from inside a train designed specifically for the experience.
As part of its service readiness, Nusantara Explorer has completed various technical preparation and certification processes with the Directorate General of Railways. These stages were carried out to ensure the train is ready to provide a safe and comfortable travel experience.
The development of rail-based tourism also creates new opportunities to expand travel options while supporting Indonesia’s tourism potential. With railway networks connecting various regions, train journeys can bring passengers closer to the destinations and stories found along the route.
Through Nusantara Explorer, taking the train is no longer simply about reaching a destination—it is also about enjoying every moment in between. One trainset, different experiences, and stories of Indonesia unfolding throughout the journey.
The launch of Nusantara Explorer marks another step in the continued transformation of railway services toward more diverse travel experiences. By combining premium comfort with Indonesia’s landscapes, culture, and hospitality, tourism by rail now offers a whole new way to experience the country.
