Traveling by train has become more convenient and affordable for millions of Indonesians. Thanks to the Government's Public Service Obligation (PSO) program and Pioneer Railway Services, more communities can enjoy safe, reliable, and budget-friendly rail transportation.

During the first half of 2026, rail travel continued to attract more passengers than ever before. KAI Group served 258.9 million passengers, with approximately 90.79 percent of them using services supported by PSO, Pioneer Rail Services, or other Government assignments.

These services include long-distance and local trains, KAI Commuter, LRT Jabodebek, selected airport rail services, LRT South Sumatra, and the Makassar–Parepare Railway, providing greater accessibility and more travel options for communities across Indonesia.

According to Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Government support plays a vital role in keeping train fares affordable while ensuring railway services remain accessible in regions with diverse transportation needs.

"PSO helps keep train fares affordable, while Pioneer Railway Services expand transportation access in areas that still require Government support. Together, these programs provide communities with more travel options that suit their everyday needs," Anne said.

Beyond affordable travel, PSO services support daily activities such as commuting to work, attending school, conducting business, visiting family, and accessing education, healthcare, and public services in other cities.

Between January and June 2026, PSO train services served more than 9.5 million passengers, while KAI Commuter welcomed over 204 million passengers and LRT Jabodebek carried more than 16 million passengers, reflecting the growing demand for modern public transportation.

Airport rail services also remained a popular choice, serving more than 3 million passengers during the same period. Meanwhile, Pioneer Railway Services in South Sumatra and South Sulawesi transported approximately 2.3 million passengers, helping improve regional connectivity and economic activity.

Anne added that the increasing number of passengers demonstrates the growing importance of integrated public transportation. Continued collaboration between the Government and stakeholders will ensure railway services remain safe, reliable, affordable, and accessible for everyone.

As PSO and Pioneer Railway Services continue to expand, more Indonesians can enjoy efficient, affordable, and comfortable rail transportation while supporting regional mobility and economic growth.
