From the first Semarang–Tanggung railway line in 1867 to an ever-evolving modern railway network, Indonesia’s long railway story was celebrated through The Continuum – Timeless Transformation at Ciputra Artpreneur Jakarta on Monday (September 28). As KAI marks its 81st Anniversary, the celebration became a moment to look back at its history while highlighting innovations shaping the future of rail travel.

The 81st Anniversary celebration brought together government representatives, stakeholders, passengers, communities, business partners, and various groups that have been part of Indonesia’s railway journey. Through the theme The Continuum – Timeless Transformation, the event reflected a journey that continues to evolve with the times while maintaining a strong commitment to service and innovation.

The story began with the construction of Indonesia’s first railway line connecting Semarang and Tanggung in 1867. Its development continued through various phases until railway management was taken over by the Indonesian people and eventually evolved into PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) as it is known today.

Another significant milestone came on September 28, 1945, when Indonesian railway workers took over the railway office from the Japanese authorities in Bandung. The event became an important part of the history of Indonesian railway management and later became the foundation for Indonesia’s Railway Day commemoration.

Throughout its history, Indonesia’s railway organization went through several transformations, from Djawatan Kereta Api Republik Indonesia (DKARI) and Perusahaan Negara Kereta Api (PNKA) to Perusahaan Umum Kereta Api (Perumka), before becoming PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero).

As KAI enters its 81st year, the transformation continues through service improvements, stronger connectivity, product innovation, and an increasingly important role for railways in supporting public mobility and national economic growth.

The progress is reflected in its January–August 2026 performance. KAI Group served 351,602,397 passengers, representing a 7.09 percent increase compared with the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, railway freight volume reached 44,905,963 tons, consisting of 36,854,758 tons of coal and 8,051,205 tons of non-coal commodities.

These figures highlight the expanding role of railways—not only as a mobility option for passengers but also as an important part of the national logistics chain through rail-based freight transportation.

Throughout 2026, new services and innovations have continued to be developed to meet increasingly diverse community needs. Kereta Api Kerakyatan provides more affordable travel options, while Kereta Petani dan Pedagang supports the economic activities of farmers and traders. At the same time, rail-based tourism services continue to be developed to offer new ways of experiencing Indonesia’s destinations.

The 81-year journey is also about the people behind the railway. KAI employees, regulators, business partners, passengers, communities, and stakeholders have all played a role in shaping the development of Indonesia’s railway system.

Looking ahead, national railway development will continue to focus on strengthening networks and services across Indonesia. Expanding connectivity beyond Java is among the key steps toward providing broader access to rail-based transportation while supporting tourism and regional economic growth.

The Continuum – Timeless Transformation reflects the idea that the railway journey never truly stops. From the first railway line to today’s innovations, every era brings change, every journey creates a story, and every step opens a path toward the future.

As KAI celebrates its 81st Anniversary, the journey continues with a commitment to connectivity, innovation, and services that remain relevant to society. From a rich history, Indonesia’s railway journey continues forward into the future with the spirit of Semakin Melayani.
