KAI Introduces Face Recognition Technology for Easier Boarding
There is good news for passengers who frequently travel by train. KAI has now introduced face recognition boarding gates at 19 stations across Java and Sumatra. These stations are spread across various regions, from Jakarta to Medan.
The face recognition boarding gate is available at several stations. In Operation Area 1, it can be found at Gambir and Bekasi Stations. In Operation Area 2, the service is available at Bandung and Kiaracondong Stations. In Operation Area 3, it is available at Cirebon Station. In Operation Area 4, the feature is available at Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng, Pekalongan, and Tegal Stations.
In Operation Area 5, the facility is available at Purwokerto and Kutoarjo Stations, while in Operation Area 6, it is available at Yogyakarta, Lempuyangan, and Solo Balapan Stations. Madiun Station in Operation Area 7, as well as Surabaya Pasarturi, Surabaya Gubeng, and Malang Stations in Operation Area 8, are also equipped with face recognition. According to Vice President Public Relations KAI, Anne Purba, the system uses advanced cameras to identify passengers’ faces and validate tickets and vaccination status. The verification process is very fast, taking only about 1 second, allowing passengers to avoid long queues.
This innovation is part of KAI’s ongoing effort to improve services for its passengers. As of August 2024, KAI Group has served more than 299 million passengers, including intercity trains, commuter services, airport trains, LRT Jabodebek, tourism trains, and Whoosh high-speed rail services.
KAI continues to improve service quality, safety, and comfort through consistent innovation while also supporting sustainability goals (SDGs), aiming to make rail transportation more environmentally friendly, efficient, and reliable.
