Landslides are a serious threat that can disrupt railway operations. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) as the railway operator in Indonesia has implemented various preventive measures to ensure safe and smooth train operations. What concrete steps has KAI taken to prevent landslides along railway tracks? Here is the explanation.

1. Evaluation and Identification of Landslide-Prone Areas

The first step in landslide prevention is evaluation and identification of vulnerable areas. KAI uses a multi-method approach, including geological, hydrological, geomorphological analysis, and field surveys. This allows them to understand soil conditions, slopes, and other factors that may trigger landslides.

2. Infrastructure Strengthening

To minimize landslide risks, KAI strengthens infrastructure in areas identified as landslide-prone. These measures include installing gabions (wire cages filled with rocks), tunnels, and retaining walls. In addition, repair or replacement of foundations and structures such as bridges and utility poles is also carried out regularly.

3. Integration of Early Detection Technology

KAI has adopted early detection technology to anticipate potential landslides. Sensor-based early warning systems are used to detect changes in soil conditions that may trigger landslides. Weather monitoring is also carried out to provide information on heavy rainfall or other extreme weather that may trigger landslides.

4. Routine Maintenance and Care Program

To maintain slope stability and prevent potential landslides, KAI carries out routine maintenance and care programs. This includes vegetation clearing, planting vegetation that strengthens soil, and regular infrastructure maintenance.

5. Bioengineering/Vegetative Innovation

As an innovative effort, KAI applies bioengineering/vegetative methods in landslide management. By involving plants such as vetiver grass (fragrant root), bamboo, and pine trees, this method is not only effective in strengthening slopes but also environmentally friendly. Bioengineering/vegetation is one of the new strategies implemented by KAI during the rainy season, especially ahead of the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

To date, KAI has planted 4,311 trees, consisting of 3,419 trees under 2 meters tall and 892 trees over 2 meters tall. KAI has also planted vetiver grass over an area of 4,706 square meters in several landslide-prone slopes.

Trees growing along railway lines play an important role in strengthening soil structure, reducing erosion, and significantly lowering landslide risk. In addition, these plants also function as water absorbers, helping regulate rainwater flow and preventing flooding that could disrupt train operations.

6. Community and Local Government Involvement

KAI collaborates with local communities and local governments in landslide prevention efforts. This includes participation in socialization activities, labor assistance from local residents, and funding support for vegetation seeds or heavy equipment. In addition, KAI conducts education and awareness programs about landslide hazards and the importance of maintaining the environment around railway tracks. This involves direct outreach, distribution of educational materials, and cooperation with relevant agencies.

7. Emergency Plans and Special Protocols

To deal with emergency situations, KAI has special plans and protocols for handling landslides. A trained landslide response team is formed, clear handling procedures are prepared, and necessary equipment is always ready for use.

8. Long-Term Preventive Measures

In addition to current efforts, KAI also plans long-term preventive measures. These include improving railway construction quality, vegetation planting, and routine monitoring of railway conditions in landslide-prone areas.

Landslide prevention along railway lines is a priority for KAI to ensure passenger safety and operational continuity. By combining comprehensive evaluation, infrastructure strengthening, modern technology, and community involvement, KAI is committed to continuously improving its landslide prevention system for the sustainability of railway transportation in Indonesia.

“KAI continues to proactively prepare all aspects, especially in facing the rainy season and anticipating landslides and other disruptions, to ensure smooth and safe train operations,” concluded VP Public Relations KAI Joni Martinus.
