Consistently Preserving the Environment, KAI Carries Out Planting of One Million Trees
Global warming is a serious challenge faced by the world today. Its harmful impacts on the environment, climate, and human life have driven collective efforts to find solutions that can counter rapid climate change. One solution that is increasingly receiving attention is tree planting as a concrete and effective action to respond to climate change.
KAI has a strong commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability. One real step taken is through tree planting programs both at stations and in office areas. This is a support for the BUMN Movement to Green Indonesia and also reflects KAI’s concern for the environment.

This tree planting is one of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental (TJSL) Programs focused on nature conservation.
In 2021, KAI planted 13,023 trees, followed by 64,157 trees in 2022, and in 2023 up to November, 17,123 trees had been planted. In total, KAI has planted 94,303 trees, with details of 36,576 trees planted at KAI stations and offices, while 57,727 trees were handed over to be planted by the community.
The sustainability of this program is reflected in ongoing maintenance after planting through regular monitoring. KAI selects various types of trees, including fruit trees such as guava, water guava, mango, durian, rambutan, avocado, and longan, as well as other types such as trembesi, tabebuya, cypress, pucuk merah, ketapang kencana, and pule.
Vice President Public Relations KAI Joni Martinus stated that this tree planting is one of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental (TJSL) Programs focused on nature conservation. This program is implemented as part of KAI’s efforts to support a healthy environment. The planted trees play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide, producing more oxygen, and preventing potential landslides, especially in areas with unstable soil structures or sloped terrain.
“KAI carries out tree planting across all its operational areas, both in operational regions and regional divisions. In addition, KAI also provides tree seedlings to the community by involving environmental communities and local governments to participate in tree planting activities,” Joni said.
The company also actively involves its employees in environmental awareness campaigns, including tree planting programs and other TJSL activities. This aims to give employees an understanding of the importance of their contribution to environmental preservation.
In the future, KAI has a long-term plan to plant one million trees by 2041. This step demonstrates KAI’s commitment to maintaining the sustainability of the tree planting program and its contribution to environmental preservation. KAI’s effort to ensure the positive impact of this tree planting program is by calculating SROI (Social Return on Investment), ensuring that every tree planted provides real benefits for the environment and society.
KAI’s tree planting program is not merely an environmental conservation effort, but also an investment for a greener and more sustainable future. Through collaboration and active involvement of all parties, this program does not only plant trees, but also plants hope for future generations.
“We believe that tree planting will bring many positive impacts, such as cleaner air, reduced global warming effects, and the ability to absorb air pollution. This effort to support environmental preservation through the one million tree planting program is expected to succeed by involving various parties who care about the environment to participate in protecting the earth,” Joni concluded.
