Coal freight trains dominate the increase in freight transport

This is indicated by the performance increase in KAI's freight transport during Semester I 2022. KAI transported 26.7 million tons of goods, a 15% increase compared to Semester I 2021 when KAI transported 23.2 million tons of goods.

"The performance increase in KAI's freight transport in Semester I 2022 shows that rail freight services are increasingly relied upon by the public and have bright prospects ahead," said VP Public Relations of KAI Joni Martinus.

The increase in KAI's freight transport performance in Semester I 2022 was dominated by coal transport at 20.6 million tons. In addition, an increase also occurred in retail goods commodities. In Semester I 2022, KAI transported 85,231 tons of goods, up 29% compared to Semester I 2021 when KAI transported 65,900 tons of goods. Generally, various commodities transported by KAI, such as containers, cement, fuel, CPO, pulp, and others, experienced an increase in transport volume.

Trains are one of the main modes of transport used to carry finished goods and basic materials for various industries, including coal, trade, manufacturing, and other industries that contribute to the country's economy. Through the freight transport sector, KAI contributes to distributing national logistics in the form of food, agriculture, and MSME products. Additionally, rail freight transport also improves the trade balance of export goods because some of the goods transported by KAI are export commodities.

Furthermore, KAI recorded an increase in train passenger volume in Semester I 2022. The passenger volume in Semester I 2022 was dominated by Commuter Line (KRL) passengers in the Jabodetabek area, reaching 89.9 million passengers. This increase was supported by the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic, improving vaccination rates, and the relaxation of travel requirements in early 2022.

"The passenger transport performance of the KAI Group in Semester I 2022 experienced a significant recovery. This positive trend shows an increase in public mobility and rising public trust in rail transport," said VP Public Relations of KAI Joni Martinus.

This year, KAI also continues to expand services by reopening the Garut - Cibatu railway line on March 24, 2022. The Garut - Cibatu line first opened in 1889 and ceased operations in 1983. In the reactivation of the 19 km line, 3 stations were put back into operation, namely Garut, Wanaraja, and Pasirjengkol stations.

During the Semester I 2022 period, KAI also held the Eid (Lebaran) Transport season again, after a 2-year hiatus due to high Covid-19 pandemic cases. Passenger volume during the 2022 Eid Transport reached 4.39 million passengers over the 22-day operation. This remarkable achievement approached the 2019 Eid Transport achievement of 6.84 million passengers.

Based on these achievements, KAI is committed to continuing to innovate to serve other commodity shipments according to customer demand.

"Moving forward, KAI will optimize freight transport by continuing to research freight potential, collaborating and partnering with new allies, and engineering operational patterns. The hope is that KAI's freight transport will continue to grow and maximize its role in distributing national logistics," said Joni.

KAI is also committed to improving by always listening to customer input as a form of comprehensive enhancement across all its services. KAI is open to all suggestions, feedback, and criticism, and will immediately inform customers if there are updates to regulations, service schemes, or other important matters.

"KAI expresses its deepest gratitude to all customers who have used KAI's services during this Semester I 2022. We invite the entire public to continue using trains, which are safe, comfortable, and healthy," concluded Joni.
