Mental health has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. People are gradually realizing that maintaining physical health alone is not enough, as poor mental health often contributes to declining physical well-being. The importance of mental health is recognized globally through World Mental Health Day, initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), which is observed every year on 10 October.

Recognizing the growing awareness of mental health, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has responded by supporting the well-being of its nearly 30,000 employees. Employees are among KAI's most valuable assets, making it the company's responsibility to support their overall well-being, including their mental health. This has become even more important during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has required individuals to adapt to a new normal across many aspects of daily life. Such changes can affect employees' psychological well-being and, in many cases, impact their work performance and productivity.

One of KAI's initiatives to help employees maintain their mental health is by providing professional counseling services. Managed under the Assessment and Human Resources Development unit, employees can consult trained professionals, including four licensed psychologists (holding a Master's Degree in Professional Psychology) and five Psychology graduates with legally recognized qualifications. In addition to its internal team, KAI also collaborates with external mental health professionals. These specialists are available to help employees deal with emotional and mental health-related challenges.

The psychological counseling services are available through various methods, including telephone interviews, chat, and video calls. The counseling is not limited to work-related issues but also covers family matters and personal problems that may affect employees' performance.

Through these counseling services, KAI hopes to help employees better recognize and manage mental health challenges so they can resolve their issues effectively and regain the motivation and enthusiasm to contribute to the company. If an employee's condition requires more intensive treatment, they will be referred to an external psychological institution for further professional care.

Although KAI has provided psychological counseling services for several years, the program has been significantly expanded during the Covid-19 pandemic. Major changes in working patterns, including Work from Home (WFH) arrangements and adapting to new daily routines, have caused increased stress among employees. KAI's psychology team plays an important role in helping employees adjust to these significant changes so they can remain motivated and productive.

Throughout 2021, a total of 15 employees utilized the counseling services provided by KAI. This demonstrates that psychological counseling is a valuable service needed by employees.

KAI has also introduced various initiatives to encourage employees to use the counseling services. One of these initiatives is the regular distribution of digital posters via email containing motivational content and self-development tips, which are sent weekly to all employees. These posters also include information about the counseling services and contact details for employees who need psychological assistance.

The process for accessing counseling services is simple. Employees only need to contact the designated contact person listed on the digital posters. Through these services, employees can openly discuss their concerns with a professional psychologist, helping them feel more at ease and more motivated to perform their work.

During the pandemic, KAI's psychology team has also been part of the company's healthcare team, regularly monitoring and supporting employees affected by Covid-19 while facilitating motivational webinars delivered by professional practitioners.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has indirectly reminded us of the importance of maintaining both physical and mental health. This is why KAI has strengthened the role of its internal psychologists. It reflects KAI's commitment to protecting and supporting its employees," said KAI VP Public Relations Joni Martinus. (Public Relations KAI)
