Nusantara Explorer Built by Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng Undergoes Static and Dynamic Tests
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) conducted static and dynamic tests on two Nusantara Explorer Luxury Sleeper Train coaches that have completed the interior development phase at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng.
The dynamic test was carried out on the round-trip Surabaya Gubeng–Lamongan route. The test was conducted to evaluate the train's operational performance, including its stability, braking system, electrical system, and the functionality of supporting facilities while in motion.
Prior to the dynamic test, KAI also conducted a static test to verify the performance of onboard systems and facilities while the train was stationary. Both testing phases form an essential part of the evaluation process before the Nusantara Explorer project advances to its next stage of development.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the Nusantara Explorer remains under gradual development and refinement at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng.
"As part of the planned 12-coach trainset, two coaches have now completed the interior development phase and successfully undergone both static and dynamic testing. The test results will serve as valuable input for the next phase of improvements," Anne said.
The Nusantara Explorer is being developed as a luxury sleeper train that combines private sleeping accommodations, personalized services, premium dining, onboard entertainment, and an immersive journey through Indonesia's scenic landscapes.
The complete trainset is planned to consist of 12 coaches, including sleeper cabin coaches, a Grand Restaurant, a lounge coach, and operational support coaches. All development and modification work is being carried out at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng.
"The Nusantara Explorer showcases the capability of the Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng workforce in developing rolling stock with increasingly diverse service concepts. Their technical expertise and attention to detail play a vital role throughout every stage of the project," Anne added.
The sleeper cabins are designed in three categories: Signature Class, Advance Class, and Compact Class, each offering different cabin layouts and levels of privacy to accommodate a variety of passenger preferences.
Signature Class features spacious private cabins with premium amenities. Advance Class combines the comfort of a sleeper cabin with an efficient interior layout, while Compact Class offers a more space-efficient design without compromising comfort or practical storage facilities.
The Nusantara Explorer is also designed to feature a Grand Restaurant, providing a premium onboard dining experience. The dining area has been developed to deliver personalized service through thoughtfully arranged dining tables, ambient lighting, and private dining spaces.
In addition, the trainset is planned to include a lounge where passengers can relax and socialize. The lounge concept features comfortable seating, a bar, entertainment facilities, a piano, an audio system, and panoramic windows for enjoying the scenery throughout the journey.
The interior design blends neoclassical proportions, warm-toned materials, soft lighting, and Indonesian cultural motifs. Each space has been designed with its own distinctive character while remaining connected under a unified Nusantara travel theme.
Indonesia's rich cultural heritage is reflected through elements inspired by Wayang Kulit, Lasem Batik, Sekar Jagad, and traditional Balinese motifs, incorporated into the interior décor, decorative patterns, materials, and color palette.
"Indonesia's cultural identity is an integral part of the Nusantara Explorer experience. Every aspect—from the interior spaces and decorative motifs to the culinary offerings and onboard services—has been carefully developed to allow passengers to experience the richness of the Nusantara throughout their journey," Anne explained.
Following the completion of the static and dynamic testing of the first two coaches, KAI will continue with further technical evaluations, facility enhancements, and the development of the remaining coaches in accordance with the project's implementation schedule.
Information regarding the route, operating schedule, fares, final train composition, and commercial launch date of the Nusantara Explorer will be announced once all development, testing, inspections, and service preparations have been fully completed.
"KAI will ensure that every aspect of safety, rolling stock reliability, and service readiness fully complies with all applicable standards before the Nusantara Explorer begins commercial operations," Anne concluded.
