As the Argo Service Legacy Approaches 31 Years, KAI Continues to Enhance Intercity Travel Comfort

July 31, 2026 will mark 31 years since Perusahaan Umum Kereta Api (Perumka), the predecessor of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), launched Argo Bromo JS-950 on July 31, 1995. The introduction of the service became one of the milestones in the development of intercity rail travel in Indonesia. Two years later, Argo Bromo Anggrek began operations on September 24, 1997 and expanded the Argo service family.

For more than three decades, intercity travel standards have continued to evolve in line with customer needs. Improvements have included rolling stock, interior design, seating comfort, onboard facilities, travel time, service class options, and digital convenience from the moment customers plan their journeys.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that the Argo legacy has become an important part of KAI’s journey in improving the quality of intercity services while continuing to place safety and punctuality as priorities.

“For nearly 31 years, the Argo legacy has evolved alongside customer needs. Upgrades to rolling stock, facilities, travel time, and digital services continue to be implemented so that intercity travel becomes increasingly comfortable and relevant to the mobility patterns of the public,” Anne said.

Currently, the Argo name is still used for eight services: Argo Wilis on the Bandung–Surabaya Gubeng round-trip route, Argo Semeru on the Gambir–Surabaya Gubeng round-trip route, and Argo Lawu and Argo Dwipangga on the Gambir–Solo Balapan round-trip route.

The Argo name is also used for Argo Sindoro, Argo Muria, and Argo Merbabu on the Gambir–Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng round-trip route, as well as Argo Anjasmoro on the Gambir–Surabaya Pasar Turi round-trip route. These services operate in the premium executive segment with operational speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

Data from several services show strong public demand for intercity travel. Argo Merbabu served 277,780 customers during the first semester of 2026, an increase of 13.97 percent compared with 243,722 customers in the same period of 2025.

Argo Wilis served 142,412 customers, up 11.62 percent from 127,582 customers. Argo Lawu recorded 94,971 customers, an increase of 5.64 percent from 89,903 customers, while Argo Dwipangga served 100,576 customers, up 1.23 percent from 99,355 customers in the first semester of 2025.

Argo Anjasmoro served 84,871 customers during January–June 2026. A year-on-year growth comparison for this service was not presented because the first-semester 2025 data did not yet include an equivalent service period.

“Each service has different customer characteristics and travel patterns. Volume data, customer feedback, rolling stock readiness, travel time, and the needs of each corridor are all part of the evaluation for service development,” Anne explained.

The Argo legacy has also continued through adjustments to product identity. The service previously known as Argo Bromo Anggrek is now branded as KA Anggrek, while Argo Parahyangan has become KA Parahyangan.

During the first semester of 2026, the service now known as KA Anggrek served 234,299 customers, an increase of 39.99 percent compared with 167,368 customers in the first semester of 2025. In the same period, KA Parahyangan served 570,192 customers, up 32.61 percent from 429,990 customers.

According to Anne, the name changes are part of product management that is adjusted to travel characteristics and service development direction. Safety, reliability, punctuality, and comfort remain the standards maintained on every journey.

“Service identities may be adjusted, while service quality continues to be developed. KAI wants every travel option to have a clear character and to meet customer needs on each corridor,” Anne said.

The development of intercity travel has also been marked by the introduction of Executive Stainless Steel New Generation, Economy New Generation, Luxury, Panoramic, and Compartment Suite trains. These options provide customers with greater flexibility in choosing facilities and travel experiences.

Compartment Suite trains served 26,123 customers during the first semester of 2026, an increase of 64.76 percent compared with 15,855 customers in the same period of 2025. The increase indicates growing demand for travel services with more private space and more personalized facilities.

The customer experience is also strengthened through Access by KAI, which supports ticket booking and management, trip planning through Trip Planner, seat selection, Railfood and hotel reservations, and journey position monitoring through Live Tracking.

“The Argo legacy shows that rail services continue to evolve from one era to another. KAI will continue these improvements so that intercity travel becomes increasingly safe, reliable, comfortable, and aligned with the needs of the public,” Anne concluded.
