PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to develop affordable economy-class train services with progressively improved travel comfort. Through the People’s Economy Class Train, KAI provides mobility options for the public with enhanced interior arrangements and more comfortable seating, while maintaining customer-friendly fares.

The People’s Economy Class Train is currently operated on the Cikuray train service for the Garut–Pasarsenen round-trip route. Since its launch from 11 June to 26 July 2026, the service has accommodated 79,450 passengers.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the deployment of the People’s Economy Class Train on the Cikuray service is part of service improvements designed based on customer needs and feedback.

“Customers seek travel that is both affordable and comfortable. The People’s Economy Class Train has been developed to meet these expectations, enabling the public to access intercity travel with improved facilities while maintaining affordable fares,” said Anne.

During the period of 11 June–26 July 2026, the Cikuray service with the People’s Economy Class Train carried 32,145 passengers from Garut to Pasarsenen and 47,305 passengers from Pasarsenen to Garut.

The high utilisation rate reflects the important role of the Cikuray service in supporting mobility across Garut, Bandung, Purwakarta, Bekasi, Jakarta, and other areas along the route. The service facilitates travel for work, education, trade, tourism, and family visits at a more affordable cost.

The People’s Economy Class Train is a product of development by KAI personnel at Balai Yasa Manggarai. Enhancements include interior refurbishment, reconfiguration of seating layouts, and the use of seats adjustable to the direction of travel.

These improvements provide a more comfortable seating position and a better travel environment for passengers, while maintaining appropriate service capacity for public transportation needs.

Prior to its deployment on the Cikuray service, the People’s Economy Class Train operated as an additional train on the Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen round-trip route during the Eid transportation period from 11 March to 5 April 2026. During this time, the service was used by 24,398 passengers, consisting of 12,262 passengers on the Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen route and 12,136 passengers on the return route.

In total, since its introduction during the Eid transportation period until 26 July 2026, the People’s Economy Class Train has served 103,848 passengers.

“This passenger volume serves as valuable input for KAI in evaluating the future development of economy-class services. Every improvement in facilities is aimed at ensuring that the benefits are directly experienced by the public through safe, comfortable, reliable, and affordable journeys,” Anne added.

KAI will continue to listen to customer feedback and evaluate travel patterns, utilisation levels, and onboard experiences. These evaluations will inform decisions on service enhancements and the development of rolling stock aligned with public needs.

“We want rail transport to remain a mode of travel that is close to the community. Affordable fares must go hand in hand with improved service quality, so that more people can enjoy comfortable intercity travel,” Anne concluded.
