PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has completed the delivery of 54 CC205 locomotives from Progress Rail to strengthen the readiness of its logistics services in South Sumatra. The completion of the procurement was marked by the Locomotive Handover Celebration held at Jaladara Room, Jakarta Railway Center, Jakarta, on Wednesday (22/7/2026).

The event brought together representatives from KAI and Progress Rail to reinforce their long-term partnership in rolling stock development, technology, maintenance, and human resource competency. The collaboration is aimed at supporting the enhancement of capacity and reliability of rail logistics services in South Sumatra.

The 54 locomotives consist of CC205 Series 25 and Series 26 units, which have been prepared to support operations in KAI’s Regional Division III Palembang. The first locomotive was delivered in August 2025, followed by phased deliveries until the 54th unit was received in May 2026.

The procurement of the 54 CC205 locomotives forms part of KAI’s preparation to meet the growing demand for coal transportation and other commodities in southern Sumatra. The additional fleet also supports the phased expansion of logistics services in line with the readiness of infrastructure, terminals, operating patterns, and customer demand.
The CC205 locomotive is equipped with an AC traction system and a 2,200-horsepower engine. It also features a Driver Safety System to help manage the risk of driver fatigue, PowerView Detect to support track condition monitoring, and UpTime Connect, which enables 24-hour locomotive performance monitoring.

During operational trials in the Palembang region, a single CC205 locomotive successfully hauled 60 freight wagons. The trial results form part of KAI’s evaluation in determining future operating patterns by considering locomotive capability, track conditions, infrastructure readiness, driver competency, and railway operational safety.

Progress Rail Senior Vice President of International Locomotive Sales and Operations, Colin Kerelchuk, stated that the completion of the procurement reflects the collaborative efforts of Progress Rail, KAI, and all parties involved throughout the production, delivery, testing, training, and operational preparation processes.

"We appreciate KAI’s trust and support throughout the completion of these 54 locomotives. Progress Rail remains committed to continuing our collaboration through technology support, maintenance, training, and technical capability enhancement to ensure the locomotives operate reliably and efficiently," said Colin.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said that the addition of the 54 CC205 locomotives further strengthens KAI’s readiness to serve logistics demand in South Sumatra. The region has significant commodity transportation activities and requires the support of rolling stock, infrastructure, human resources, and integrated operational systems.

"The completion of this procurement is part of KAI’s efforts to enhance the capacity and reliability of logistics services. Every asset must be supported by track readiness, operational planning, maintenance systems, workforce competency, and performance monitoring to deliver optimal benefits," Bobby stated.
Bobby explained that service enhancement is being implemented through the people, process, and performance approach. From the people perspective, a total of 305 employees have completed training, consisting of 195 personnel in mechanical, electrical, and maintenance fields, along with 110 operational personnel.

From the process perspective, the procurement includes a two-year maintenance program, technical support, knowledge transfer, and capability development for KAI personnel in operating and maintaining the locomotives. These initiatives are designed to ensure fleet readiness while strengthening KAI’s independent maintenance capabilities.

From the performance perspective, the CC205 locomotive offers greater hauling power, enabling longer and higher-capacity train formations to operate more efficiently. Under certain operating patterns, a single CC205 locomotive also has the potential to replace two locomotives from previous generations, while still taking track conditions and safety evaluation results into account.

The locomotive’s AC traction technology, remote monitoring system, and integrated safety features support the management of fleet performance, fuel consumption, component condition, and driver readiness. Periodic evaluations are conducted to ensure that increased hauling capacity remains aligned with rolling stock reliability and railway operational safety.

The procurement of these 54 locomotives has been prepared to support the gradual expansion of logistics capacity toward approximately 85 million tons per year, in accordance with the planned development stages. The achievement of this capacity will continue to depend on the completion of infrastructure, terminal readiness, line capacity, and evolving customer demand.

"Future strategic cooperation should focus on knowledge transfer, competency development, maintenance capability enhancement, and the development of domestic facilities. KAI requires long-term partners who can support the strengthening of Indonesia’s railway and national logistics ecosystem," Bobby concluded.
