KAI Accelerates Level Crossing Adjustments to Strengthen Travel Safety in DAOP DIVRE

The safety of train travel and road users has become a shared concern following the incident in Eastern Bekasi on April 27, 2026. President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto instructed the acceleration of level crossing management to enhance travel safety for both train operations and road users.

Following up on this directive, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated on Thursday, April 30, 2026, that the government will accelerate level crossing management by setting priority scales, taking inventory of field conditions, and strengthening shared safety infrastructure and facilities alongside relevant stakeholders.

Currently, there are 3,674 level crossings in Indonesia, with 1,810 points serving as key management targets. Of that number, 172 level crossings are targeted for closure due to limited road conditions, while 1,638 other crossings require gradual upgrades to safety facilities.

In line with this, KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the accelerated restructuring of level crossings is being carried out because railway travel safety requires collective discipline and compliance with prevailing regulations.

"Level crossings represent the point of intersection between train travel and public activity on roads. Therefore, every point deemed dangerous needs to be restructured promptly so that safety risks can be minimized," said Anne.

Anne emphasized that trains have different operational characteristics compared to road vehicles, as they cannot stop abruptly when traveling. The existence of unauthorized crossings or unofficial access points near railway tracks poses potential hazards to both the public and train journeys.

"Safety at crossings requires mutual care. Once dangerous crossings have been closed, we invite the community not to reopen them or create new crossings," Anne continued.

KAI recorded that between April 27 and May 9, 2026, a total of 29 crossing points were closed and 5 crossing points were narrowed across various operational regions.

Anne added that creating unauthorized level crossings without permission violates statutory provisions and can endanger public safety. In accordance with Law Number 23 of 2007 on Railways and Minister of Transportation Regulation No. PM 94 of 2018, crossing construction must go through government authorization and meet technical safety requirements.

"We urge the public not to reopen crossings that have been closed and not to create new access points independently on railway tracks. Every driver is also required to pause, look right and left before crossing a level crossing, whether the crossing gate is open or closed. Crossing safety requires shared vigilance because safety risks can occur in a matter of seconds," Anne concluded.
