PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) officially launched Nusantara Explorer, a premium tourist trainset offering a distinctive Indonesian travel experience, at the highlight event of KAI’s 81st Anniversary, “The Continuum – Timeless Transformation,” held at Ciputra Artpreneur Jakarta on Monday (September 28).

The presence of Nusantara Explorer marks part of KAI’s transformation journey in providing railway services that bring customers closer to Indonesia’s rich heritage through a combination of travel, culture, comfort, and premium service.

Developed by KAI employees through Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, Nusantara Explorer features a travel concept that transforms the train into an experiential space. Each journey is designed to connect customers with Indonesia’s natural beauty, culture, and hospitality throughout the trip.

President Director of KAI Bobby Rasyidin said Nusantara Explorer was developed to support the strengthening of Indonesian tourism through a travel experience by train.

“Some time ago, we received directions to introduce railway services that could support Indonesian tourism. Today, we are introducing Nusantara Explorer, a journey that combines Indonesia’s natural beauty, local hospitality, local wisdom, and Indonesian culture,” said Bobby.

Nusantara Explorer was developed based on the idea of creating a different travel experience by combining Indonesia’s tourism potential with premium railway services.

The trainset is the result of interior development and modification carried out by KAI employees at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng. The development process went through various stages of refinement to provide customers with greater comfort throughout the journey.

In one trainset, Nusantara Explorer features several service areas with different characteristics, namely Signature Class, Advanced Class, Compact Class, Lounge, Grand Restaurant, and Kitchen & Crew.

The Signature Class and Advanced Class areas provide private spaces for customers seeking a premium travel experience. Meanwhile, the Lounge and Grand Restaurant serve as interaction spaces offering a more dynamic travel atmosphere with a service concept that prioritizes comfort.

Overall, Nusantara Explorer has a capacity of up to 91 customers, consisting of 36 customers in the cabin area and 55 customers in the Lounge and Grand Restaurant areas.

During its development, Nusantara Explorer also underwent refinement based on various feedback to enhance the customer experience, including aspects of air circulation, communication and internet connectivity, as well as supporting travel facilities.

Bobby said Nusantara Explorer is part of KAI’s efforts to provide services with an Indonesian character that can be enjoyed by both the public and tourists.

“Indonesia has extraordinary natural wealth, culture, and destinations. Through Nusantara Explorer, we want to create a journey that provides stories, comfort, and memorable experiences for every customer,” said Bobby.

Bobby added that the development of railway-based tourism services will continue to be part of KAI’s innovation in expanding travel options for the public.

“KAI will continue to transform and provide increasingly customer-oriented services, including through the development of products that support public mobility and Indonesian tourism,” said Bobby.

Nusantara Explorer has undergone technical preparation and certification with the Directorate General of Railways as part of ensuring the readiness of the trainset before being used for travel services.

Through the launch of Nusantara Explorer, KAI presents a journey that allows customers to experience Indonesia along the railway, connecting landscapes, culture, and service experiences in a single journey.
