KAI Serves 35.26 Million Passengers, Train Travel in Sumatra Records Strong Growth
Railway passenger growth during January–July 2026 was recorded across KAI's operating regions, including Sumatra. Nationwide, KAI's Long-Distance and Local Train services served 35,257,646 passengers, an increase of 7.63% compared with the same period in 2025.
Regional data shows that Regional Division II West Sumatra served 1,359,748 passengers, an increase of 19.2% compared with 1,140,348 passengers in January–July 2025. Meanwhile, Regional Division IV Tanjungkarang served 782,548 passengers, up 14.9% from 681,150 passengers.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said the development demonstrates that rail transportation in Sumatra continues to have significant potential to meet growing mobility needs.
“Rail transportation in Sumatra is closely connected to people's daily journeys. These include intercity travel, education, work, trade, and tourism. As demand increases, service capacity and quality also need to keep pace,” said Anne.
In South Sumatra–Lampung, Rajabasa Train previously recorded 439,984 passengers in the first half of 2026, an increase of 36.44% compared with 322,485 passengers in the first half of 2025. KAI subsequently strengthened its capacity and, starting in July 2026, introduced modified premium economy coaches on the service.
In Regional Division I North Sumatra, passenger volume during January–July reached 1,630,266, while Regional Division III Palembang served 704,091 passengers.
“Growth in Sumatra demonstrates the importance of understanding local needs specifically. Each railway corridor has different passenger characteristics and economic activities,” concluded Anne.
