30% Transportation Discount Drives School Holiday Ticket Bookings, 1.1 Million Seats Already Reserved
The 2026 school holiday season has seen strong public demand for rail travel, with passengers traveling across various intercity routes connecting Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, Kutoarjo, Sukabumi, and many other destinations for holidays, family visits, educational activities, and other travel purposes.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) recorded that ticket bookings under the Government's 30% Transportation Fare Discount program, provided through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation and distributed through KAI, reached 1,101,788 seats for departures between 20 June and 5 July 2026. Based on KAI data as of 29 June 2026 at 10:00 a.m. WIB, bookings had reached 93.80% of the cumulative capacity of 1,174,624 seats, leaving 72,836 seats still available, subject to seat availability and the program's terms and conditions.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the program reflects the Government's commitment to helping the public plan school holiday travel at more affordable costs. According to Anne, the stimulus provided by the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) through KAI gives families, school students, university students, employees, and the general public greater flexibility to plan their trips in advance.
"The 30% Transportation Fare Discount helps people plan their school holiday travel more conveniently. Through KAI, we are delivering the Government's stimulus program from the Directorate General of Railways so that customers have more options to travel safely, comfortably, and with better planning,"
Ticket bookings under the discount program were particularly strong during weekends. The highest daily booking volume was recorded on 28 June 2026, with 90,366 passengers, followed by 27 June with 87,175 passengers, and 26 June with 85,397 passengers. This trend indicates that weekends remain the preferred time for people to begin their school holiday journeys.
Overall, passenger volume during the school holiday period from 20 June to 5 July 2026 reached 2,745,605 passengers as of 29 June 2026 at 10:00 a.m. WIB. The figure comprised 1,098,290 discounted passengers and 1,647,315 regular-fare passengers, meaning discounted passengers accounted for 40.0% of the total passenger volume during the school holiday period.
KAI also recorded the five train services with the highest number of discounted passengers. Joglosemarkerto ranked first with 55,844 passengers, followed by Ambarawa Ekspres with 51,749 passengers, Pangrango with 43,768 passengers, Sawunggalih with 37,649 passengers, and Jayakarta with 36,699 passengers. The data highlights strong demand for services connecting destinations associated with tourism, education, family visits, and everyday mobility.
Among departure stations, Pasar Senen Station recorded the highest number of discounted passengers at 126,478, followed by Yogyakarta Station with 77,064, Semarang Tawang Station with 52,890, Semarang Poncol Station with 50,439, and Lempuyangan Station with 42,450.
For destination stations, Pasar Senen Station also ranked first with 117,546 passengers, followed by Yogyakarta Station with 79,501, Semarang Tawang Station with 52,338, Semarang Poncol Station with 49,311, and Solo Balapan Station with 44,989. These figures reflect strong travel demand between Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Semarang, and Solo during the school holiday season.
The busiest routes under the discount program further illustrate this trend. The Lempuyangan–Pasar Senen route recorded 16,982 passengers, followed by Pasar Senen–Lempuyangan with 16,646 passengers, Pasar Senen–Yogyakarta with 14,612 passengers, Semarang Tawang–Solo Balapan with 13,157 passengers, and Solo Balapan–Semarang Tawang with 12,805 passengers. These routes continue to serve as key travel corridors for holidaymakers, family visits, and passengers returning to their hometowns or places of work and study.
Anne added that passengers can still book the remaining seats available under the discount program through the Access by KAI application, the kai.id website, Contact Center 121, station ticket counters, and KAI's official sales partners. Customers are encouraged to verify their departure date, train service, origin and destination stations, as well as their personal information before completing their booking.
"KAI expresses its appreciation to the Government, through the Directorate General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation, for providing the 30% Transportation Fare Discount as a stimulus for the public.
