Commuter Line Serves 178 Million Journeys, Connecting Breadwinners to Their Livelihoods

The sky is still dark when many people across Greater Jakarta begin leaving their homes. Some quietly say goodbye to children still asleep, prepare packed meals before departing, or hurry toward the nearest station to ensure they arrive at work on time.

They are workers, traders, public service personnel, entrepreneurs, students, and the breadwinners of their families who travel every day from surrounding cities to various centers of economic activity. For many of them, the Commuter Line is more than just a mode of transportation—it is an essential part of their daily journey to earn a living and provide for their families.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded 178,001,308 Commuter Line journeys across the Greater Jakarta area during January–June 2026. The figure illustrates how closely urban rail services are intertwined with everyday life and economic activity throughout the metropolitan region.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said travel patterns during the first half of 2026 reflected particularly strong demand on weekdays. Average daily ridership from Monday to Friday reached approximately 1.05 million journeys, around 29.3 percent higher than the weekend average of approximately 813,600 journeys per day.

“Every journey begins with hopes carried from home. There are parents heading to work to provide for their children's education, employees racing against time to secure their income, and traders and entrepreneurs whose livelihoods depend on reliable transportation. They are the breadwinners of their families who place their trust in the Commuter Line every single day,” said Anne.

Of all journeys recorded during the first half of 2026, approximately 135.7 million journeys, or 76.2 percent, took place on weekdays. Passenger volumes peak during the morning and evening rush hours as people commute to work and return home after fulfilling their daily responsibilities.

For passengers, crowded trains are far more than operational statistics. Inside every busy carriage are people standing after a long day's work, parents eager to return home to their children, and workers hoping to arrive home safely before beginning the same routine again the following day.

“When passengers experience crowded trains during peak hours, what we see is not merely high travel demand. We see the breadwinners of countless families striving to reach their workplaces on time and return home with the fruits of their hard work. That is why expanding capacity is a shared priority that must continue to be addressed,” Anne added.

The consistently high level of weekday travel highlights the strategic role of the Commuter Line in sustaining productivity across Greater Jakarta. Reliable rail services are closely linked to workers arriving on time, business continuity, access to educational institutions and public services, as well as the smooth flow of economic activity throughout Jakarta and its surrounding cities.

According to Anne, this growing demand should be accompanied by gradual capacity enhancement through additional rolling stock, increased line and station capacity, strengthened signalling and power supply systems, and continued optimization of operating patterns.

“The Government's support for expanding rolling stock and strengthening railway infrastructure delivers significant benefits to the public. Every increase in capacity provides more comfortable travel space, reduces crowding, and improves the travel experience for millions of customers who depend on the Commuter Line for their daily mobility,” Anne said.

Over the past five years, Commuter Line Jabodetabek has demonstrated a steady recovery in ridership. Passenger journeys reached 168 million in 2021, increased to 252 million in 2022, 331 million in 2023, 328.2 million in 2024, and 349.3 million in 2025. By the first half of 2026 alone, the network had already recorded 178 million journeys.

Service improvements have also been accompanied by network expansion. The number of Commuter Line stations in the Greater Jakarta area increased from 71 stations in 2015 to 85 stations in 2026. This expansion includes the opening of Jatake Station and Jakarta International Stadium Station in 2026, providing broader rail access to residential communities and emerging activity centers.

Operationally, the number of daily commuter train services increased from 881 trips per day in 2015 to 1,063 trips per day in 2025—an increase of approximately 21 percent. The additional services have been supported by continuous operational evaluations to maintain safety, punctuality, and smooth passenger mobility.

Throughout 2025, the Bogor Line recorded approximately 155 million passenger journeys, followed by the Cikarang Line with 85.9 million, the Rangkasbitung Line with 77.6 million, the Tangerang Line with 27.3 million, and the Tanjung Priok Line with approximately 3.5 million journeys. These figures illustrate the substantial flow of commuters traveling between surrounding cities and Jakarta's major employment and activity centers.

Looking ahead, the development of the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line will focus on expanding capacity, strengthening multimodal integration, enhancing digital services, and supporting transit-oriented development. Achieving these objectives will require close collaboration among KAI, KAI Commuter, the Government, and all relevant stakeholders.

“For some people, commuting by train may seem like an ordinary daily routine. But for millions of family breadwinners, every journey represents the effort to keep food on the table, provide education for their children, and bring hope back home. Every improvement in capacity means a better journey for those who work every day to support the people they love,” Anne concluded.
