Weekend Getaway to Pasarnguter Station: Enjoying a Cup of Traditional Jamu

There are many ways to spend the weekend. For some, a short trip to a countryside atmosphere is a simple way to recharge. In Sukoharjo Regency, this experience can be found in Nguter, an area closely associated with the aroma of empon-empon, herbal concoctions, traditional markets, and the long history of traditional herbal medicine (jamu) artisans.

It is in this area that Pasarnguter Station stands. Although small in size, its position holds great significance for local residents. The station serves as the closest access point to the Nguter Jamu Market, a traditional herbal medicine center widely known as one of the hubs for trading jamu, herbal plants, and empon-empon ingredients in Indonesia.

The presence of Pasarnguter Station adds a distinct flavor to train journeys. Passengers disembarking at this station can continue their trip to the market area to enjoy a warm cup of brewed jamu, observe the activities of the merchants, and learn about the local economic chain sustained by generational knowledge of herbal plants.

Nguter shares a deep bond with the culture of jamu. Many artisans and jamu gendong (mobile herbal medicine vendors) were born in this region before migrating to various areas, carrying traditional Javanese recipes with them. From bottles of jamu and carrying baskets to freshly brewed warm spices, Nguter preserves stories of perseverance, family economy, and the role of women in safeguarding traditional knowledge.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that Pasarnguter Station holds strategic value due to its proximity to local economic hubs and unique cultural destinations.

"Pasarnguter Station has a very strong character because it is deeply integrated with the lives of the Nguter community. Surrounding the station, there are jamu markets, artisans, vendors, families, and tourists—all playing a part in the region's economic rotation. KAI aims to bring train services close to such community needs,"

The strategic value of Nguter is also reflected in its regional data. According to the BPS publication Nguter Subdistrict in Figures 2025, Nguter Subdistrict has a population of 56,015. Out of this total, 37,997 people fall into the productive age group of 15–64 years. This indicates that the majority of Nguter's population is in an age bracket actively engaged in working, trading, farming, migrating, and running family businesses.

This economic activity is further supported by agricultural and bio-pharmacological potential. BPS recorded that cayenne pepper production in Nguter Subdistrict reached 1,240 quintals, turmeric production reached 287,500 kg, and mango production reached 13,530 quintals. This data illustrates that Nguter possesses an economic foundation closely tied to traditional markets, agricultural produce, and herbal commodities.

"When a station is located near the center of community activities, the benefits are widely felt. Traders can travel more easily, families have an affordable transportation option, and tourists can reach local destinations more practically. This is the role of railways in opening up economic access at the micro-scale,"

For weekend tourists, the journey to Pasarnguter Station can be made using the KA Batara Kresna on the Purwosari–Wonogiri route. With a fare of Rp4,000, passengers can enjoy a unique trip transitioning from the urban vibe of Solo, passing around Slamet Riyadi Street, to the increasingly green landscape of Sukoharjo heading towards Nguter and Wonogiri.

From January to May 2026, Pasarnguter Station served 1,805 boarding passengers and 1,201 alighting passengers. The movement of these 3,006 passengers illustrates Pasarnguter's function as a mobility hub for daily commuters, traditional traders, farmers, students, families, and tourists traveling across Solo, Sukoharjo, and Wonogiri.

The passenger flow at Pasarnguter Station also demonstrates that KA Batara Kresna plays a vital role in maintaining affordable transportation access in the southern part of the Solo Raya region. This service helps the community reach markets, economic centers, educational institutions, and local tourist spots at a family-friendly travel cost.

The momentum of UNESCO's recognition of Jamu Wellness Culture in 2023 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage further strengthens Nguter's position as a valuable cultural space. For KAI, access to areas like this must be continuously preserved because trains can bring travel, culture, and the community economy together into a single experience that hits close to home.

Anne added that KAI views small stations as a crucial component of public transportation services. In many regions, stations serve as meeting points for residents, markets, schools, workplaces, and local destinations.

"KAI will continue to maintain services at Pasarnguter Station to ensure it remains safe, comfortable, and easily accessible. We hope more people will utilize the train to enjoy weekend getaways, explore regional potential, and support the economy of Sukoharjo residents,"
