Entering the start of the week following high mobility over the weekend and the school holiday period, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is inviting customers to be more meticulous in looking after their belongings during journeys. Simple habits such as checking luggage racks, seat areas, folding trays, power outlets, and underneath seats prior to disembarking can help prevent items from being left behind on trains or at stations.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that attention toward personal baggage needs to become an integral part of the travel culture among customers. Through personnel stationed both at stations and on board trains, KAI continues to assist in the securing and processing of found items via its Lost and Found services.

“The start of the week is usually a momentum for the public to resume their daily routines after weekend travels. Therefore, we urge customers to always ensure all their belongings are accounted for before disembarking from the train or leaving the station. Taking just one minute to double-check can prevent customers from panicking due to left-behind items,”

From January to May 2026, KAI recorded 10,429 found items with an estimated value reaching IDR 7,231,538,000.

Based on categories, the found items consisted of 507 food items, 7,527 regular items, and 2,395 valuable items. Overall, 7,071 items, or 67.80 percent of the total found items, have been completely processed. In detail, 4,659 items were returned to their owners, 210 food items were disposed of in accordance with regulations, and 2,202 items were handed over to social institutions or the police. Meanwhile, 3,358 items are still in the process of storage, logging, verification, and further follow-up.

“Every item discovered by our staff will be logged, secured, and verified. For valuable belongings, the return process is conducted with a high level of caution to ensure they are received by their rightful owners,”

In terms of regions, the highest number of found items up to May 2026 was recorded in Daop 8 Surabaya with 2,373 items, followed by Daop 1 Jakarta with 2,248 items, Daop 5 Purwokerto with 1,612 items, Daop 2 Bandung with 1,346 items, and Daop 4 Semarang with 969 items.

For items successfully returned to their owners, Daop 1 Jakarta recorded the highest number with 1,374 items. This was followed by Daop 5 Purwokerto with 802 items, Daop 8 Surabaya with 539 items, Daop 6 Yogyakarta with 467 items, and Daop 2 Bandung with 452 items.

Regarding the estimated value of the goods, Daop 1 Jakarta recorded the highest value at IDR 2,678,958,500. This was followed by Daop 6 Yogyakarta at IDR 823,844,000, Daop 2 Bandung at IDR 719,292,000, Daop 4 Semarang at IDR 670,846,000, and Daop 8 Surabaya at IDR 595,974,000.

Cumulatively, the volume of found items continues to grow, rising from 2,038 items in January, 3,578 items by February, 6,047 items by March, 8,208 items by April, and reaching 10,429 items by May 2026. In May alone, an additional 2,221 found items were added to the list.

Anne explained that customers who believe they have lost an item can immediately report it to station staff, Customer Service on Station, security officers, the train conductor while still on the journey, or through the KAI Contact Center 121. Customers are advised to provide details regarding the characteristics of the item, travel time, route, seat number, booking code, and supporting identification to expedite the search process.

“We want customers to feel at ease when traveling by train. However, the security of baggage ultimately begins with the habits of the customers themselves. Keep essential items in easily supervised places, avoid placing valuables far out of reach, and recheck your surroundings before disembarking,”

KAI also advises customers to put name tags or contact labels on bags, suitcases, and other luggage. This simple step can assist personnel in making an initial identification if an item is found at a station or on a train.

“KAI staff stand ready to assist customers. The faster a report is submitted, the greater the chance of the item being located and returned. Let us start the week with a journey that is safe, tranquil, and with better order in keeping track of our personal belongings,”
