90.29 Percent of KAI Group Customers Use Public Transportation Services, Railways Expand Access to Affordable Mobility for the Public
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) together with KAI Group continues to strengthen the role of rail-based transportation in supporting public mobility across various regions of Indonesia. Throughout January–August 2026, KAI Group services were used by 351,602,397 customers, an increase of 7.09 percent compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 328,311,868 customers.
Of this total, 317.7 million customers or 90.29 percent used public services supported by the government through the Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme and pioneering services. Meanwhile, commercial services served approximately 34.2 million customers or 9.71 percent of KAI Group's total customers.
The composition of these customers demonstrates the role of railways as a mode of transportation that provides travel access for the wider public through affordable services. Various KAI services support people's travel needs, ranging from daily activities to workplaces and educational centers, intercity travel, urban connectivity, to tourism journeys.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said that KAI continues to maintain a balance between improving service quality and providing public access to rail-based transportation.
“Railways are part of people's journeys with various needs. KAI continues to provide safe, comfortable, and affordable services so that more people can utilize rail-based transportation for various activities,” said Anne.
The largest contribution came from Commuter Line services, which served 277,272,682 customers throughout January–August 2026. These services support urban mobility through KRL Jabodetabek, Commuter Line Merak, Greater Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya.
For intercity and local journeys, KAI recorded 40,379,062 customers in January–August 2026. This figure increased compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 37,152,345 customers, or an increase of 8.69 percent.
Growth was also seen in other urban railway services. LRT Jabodebek recorded 21,809,797 customers, an increase of 19.05 percent compared to 18,320,610 customers in the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, KAI Bandara served 4,647,947 customers, strengthening public travel connectivity to strategic areas.
KAI also continues to provide services with diverse travel characteristics. The Makassar–Parepare Train served 231,764 customers throughout January–August 2026, while KAI Wisata recorded 216,980 customers, an increase of 49.09 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, which recorded 145,537 customers.
The increase in the number of customers went hand in hand with KAI's efforts to maintain the quality of the travel experience. Based on the results of the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) for the first semester of 2026, KAI recorded a score of 4.53 out of 5, the highest achievement since 2020.
Anne added that KAI will continue to strengthen its services so that railway transportation becomes increasingly accessible to the public.
“KAI is present alongside the public through various services that support daily activities as well as journeys to various destinations. With increasingly developed services, KAI continues to strive to provide comfortable, safe, and affordable transportation for the people of Indonesia,” concluded Anne.
