KAI Serves 21.56 Million Tons of Coal from January to May 2026, Supporting Smooth National Logistics
Amid the growing demand for large scale commodity distribution, rail based transportation continues to play an important role in maintaining the smooth flow of the national logistics network. With its large carrying capacity and scheduled operations, rail transport has become one of the key modes supporting the movement of various strategic commodities.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that it transported 21,563,901 tons of coal during the January–May 2026 period. In May 2026 alone, the volume of coal transported reached 4,932,853 tons, reflecting the strong demand for coal distribution through rail transportation.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that coal transportation is one of KAI's core services that contributes to the smooth operation of the national supply chain.
"Coal transportation is one of KAI's strategic services in supporting the distribution of large volume commodities. We continue to maintain operational reliability to ensure deliveries are carried out in accordance with customers' needs,"
Most of KAI's coal transportation services operate in southern Sumatra, one of Indonesia's major coal-producing regions. Through a railway network connected to industrial areas and ports, commodity distribution can be carried out in a more organized and efficient manner.
The ability of rail transportation to consistently handle large volumes makes it an important part of the national logistics system. In a single trainset, rail transport is capable of carrying significant volumes of commodities, thereby supporting the smooth movement of supplies from production areas to distribution points.
According to Anne, the growing demand for national logistics requires transportation modes that offer high capacity, reliability, and efficiency. Therefore, KAI continues to strengthen its freight transportation services as part of its efforts to enhance the capacity of the national logistics sector.
"The strength of rail transportation lies in its capacity and service consistency. KAI will continue to develop its freight transportation services to meet the evolving needs of commodity distribution,"
KAI remains committed to maintaining the quality of its coal transportation services through operational enhancements, capacity improvements, and collaboration with stakeholders. These efforts form part of the company's commitment to supporting the smooth distribution of strategic commodities and strengthening national logistics connectivity.
