Ciremai Train Serves 126,580 Passengers from January to May 2026, Connecting Cultural, Educational, Industrial, and Tourism Hubs Across Central and West Java
Weekends are a time many people look forward to for visiting family, enjoying the atmosphere of a different city, attending educational activities, conducting business, or traveling for leisure. On the island of Java, these various travel purposes converge along a single railway route connecting cities with diverse characteristics. From Semarang, which has grown as a center of government and commerce, to Pekalongan with its renowned batik heritage, Tegal as a dynamic coastal city, Cirebon as a cultural hub along the northern coast of Java, and Bandung as a center of education and the creative economy, all are connected through the Ciremai Train service.
From January through May 2026, the Ciremai Train operating on the Semarang Tawang–Bandung route served 126,580 passengers. This represents an increase of 9.02 percent compared with the same period in 2025, when the service recorded 116,104 passengers.
Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said that the growth reflects the increasing public demand for transportation services connecting centers of economic activity, education, social activities, and tourism across Java.
"The growth in Ciremai Train passengers shows that demand for intercity mobility continues to increase. This service connects various centers of community activity across Central and West Java in one efficient and comfortable journey," said Anne.
The name "Ciremai" is derived from Mount Ciremai, the highest volcano in West Java, located in Kuningan and Majalengka Regencies. The name is closely associated with Cirebon, one of the key cities served by the Ciremai Train and long recognized as a center of trade and cultural exchange along Java's northern coast.
The Ciremai Train journey begins at Semarang Tawang Station. According to the Semarang Municipality in Figures 2025 publication by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Semarang has a population of approximately 1.72 million people. As the capital of Central Java Province, Semarang has developed into a center of government, trade, services, manufacturing, logistics, and education. Its vibrant economy is supported by Tanjung Emas Port, industrial estates, and numerous higher education institutions. Kota Lama Semarang (Old Town), Lawang Sewu, Sam Poo Kong Temple, and Kampung Batik Semarang are among the city's landmarks that continue to attract visitors from across Indonesia.
From Semarang, the Ciremai Train continues to Pekalongan. According to Pekalongan Municipality in Figures 2025, the city has a population of approximately 319,000 people. Pekalongan is widely recognized as one of Indonesia's largest batik industry centers and has been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since 2014. Its batik-based creative industry has developed alongside the trade and service sectors, which form the backbone of the local economy.
The journey then continues to Pemalang and Tegal. According to Tegal Municipality in Figures 2025, Tegal has a population of approximately 292,000 people. Strategically located along Java's northern coastal corridor, the city has developed as a center of trade, services, fisheries, and maritime activities. Its famous teh poci tradition, coastal culinary specialties, and proximity to numerous tourist attractions make it one of the region's busiest travel destinations throughout the year.
The Ciremai Train also stops in Brebes. According to Brebes Regency in Figures 2025, the regency has a population of more than 2 million people. Brebes is known as Indonesia's largest shallot-producing region and plays an important role in the country's agricultural sector. Mobility to and from Brebes continues to grow alongside expanding trade, educational activities, and the distribution of agricultural products to various regions.
Upon entering Cirebon, the journey offers a blend of history, culture, and economic activity. According to Cirebon Municipality in Figures 2025, the city has a population of approximately 352,000 people. Cirebon serves as the center of the Ciayumajakuning region, which encompasses Cirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka, and Kuningan. Kasepuhan Palace, Kanoman Palace, Mega Mendung batik, Empal Gentong, and Nasi Jamblang are among the city's cultural treasures that have made Cirebon one of West Java's premier destinations.
The journey continues through Jatibarang and Haurgeulis in Indramayu Regency. According to Indramayu Regency in Figures 2025, the regency has a population of approximately 1.9 million people. Indramayu is one of Indonesia's largest rice-producing regions and plays a significant role in supporting national food security. Agriculture, agricultural trade, education, and intercity travel contribute to the region's steadily growing mobility.
From Indramayu, the Ciremai Train proceeds to Cikampek, one of the most strategic transportation hubs on the island of Java. Its geographic location connects industrial areas in West Java with major cities across the island, making it a key point for both public mobility and national economic activity.
The train then stops at Purwakarta. According to Purwakarta Regency in Figures 2025, the regency has a population of approximately 1.03 million people. Purwakarta has developed into both a manufacturing center and an increasingly popular tourist destination. The Sri Baduga Fountain Park, Situ Buleud, and numerous natural attractions in the surrounding hills are among the area's favorite weekend destinations.
Before arriving in Bandung, the Ciremai Train also stops in Cimahi, a city known for its strong military heritage and its important role within the Greater Bandung metropolitan area. Daily mobility in the area is supported by integrated economic, educational, and residential links with Bandung City.
The journey concludes at Bandung Station. According to Bandung Municipality in Figures 2025, Bandung has a population of approximately 2.58 million people. The city is widely recognized as a center of education, the creative economy, technology, trade, and tourism in West Java. Its universities, Braga heritage district, Gedung Sate, culinary destinations, fashion centers, and the attractions of Greater Bandung make it one of Indonesia's leading travel destinations.
Anne explained that the Ciremai Train's route, which connects government centers, industrial zones, agricultural regions, cultural cities, and tourism destinations, provides broad benefits to the public.
"Every region served by the Ciremai Train has its own unique economic, cultural, and social characteristics. The connectivity provided by railway services helps expand public access to educational opportunities, business activities, tourism, and various other productive endeavors," said Anne.
The Ciremai Train also supports community mobility in both major cities and surrounding areas along its route. Regular transportation services facilitate travel for students, workers, MSME entrepreneurs, tourists, and people traveling between regions for various purposes.
"KAI will continue to maintain service quality to ensure that customers enjoy journeys that are safe, comfortable, punctual, and capable of strengthening interregional connectivity,"
