Enjoying a holiday with family is a moment many people look forward to. However, amid increased public mobility during the holiday period, safety must remain a top priority, especially when crossing railway level crossings.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) urges the public to be more vigilant when passing through railway level crossings. Simple actions such as stopping briefly, looking both left and right, and ensuring that no train is approaching can play an important role in preventing accidents.

Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said that increased travel activity during the holiday period is usually accompanied by heavier traffic on various roads, including at railway level crossings.

"During the holidays, public mobility increases and road traffic tends to be heavier. Therefore, we urge all road users to be more cautious when crossing railway level crossings. Stop briefly and look both left and right before crossing. Safety must always remain the priority in every journey," said Anne.

KAI's data show that from 2023 through 24 May 2026, there were 1,074 accidents at railway level crossings involving a total of 964 victims, consisting of 370 fatalities, 247 seriously injured victims, and 347 people with minor injuries. As many as 80 percent of the incidents occurred at unguarded crossings, while 88 percent of the accidents were caused by road users attempting to cross while a train was approaching.

As part of its efforts to improve safety, KAI continues to strengthen collaboration with various stakeholders to address railway level crossings across its operational areas. Of the total 3,674 railway level crossings, 1,810 are unguarded crossings that have become the primary focus of safety improvement efforts. The program includes the closure of high-risk crossings and safety enhancements at locations that remain necessary for public mobility.

As of 4 June 2026, the priority railway level crossing closure program has achieved significant progress. Of the target of 172 priority locations, 118 crossings have been successfully closed, representing 69 percent of the national target. The remaining 54 locations are the next focus for completion.

These achievements are spread across KAI's various operational regions. Divre I North Sumatra has completed all of its targeted closures at 39 locations, Daop 4 Semarang has completed 11 locations, Divre III Palembang has completed 6 locations, while Daop 2 Bandung, Daop 3 Cirebon, Daop 6 Yogyakarta, and Daop 7 Madiun have also completed all priority closure targets within their respective operational areas.

Anne explained that the railway level crossing closure program is part of KAI's ongoing efforts to reduce the potential for accidents involving trains and road users.

"Every railway level crossing that is successfully closed eliminates one potential accident risk point. Therefore, we continue to coordinate with local governments, ministries, and other stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of this program," said Anne.

In addition to reminding road users, KAI also advises train passengers to plan their travel time to stations more carefully during the holiday period. Increased traffic congestion may affect travel time to departure stations.

"We encourage customers to estimate their travel time more carefully and arrive at the station earlier. This will allow sufficient time for the boarding process and enable customers to travel more comfortably without having to rush," she added.

KAI once again reminds the public that regardless of whether a railway crossing is equipped with crossing gates, and whether the gates are open or closed, road users are still required to stop briefly and ensure that the railway track is clear before crossing.

"Trains operate on dedicated tracks and always have the right of way. Let us work together to maintain safety by remaining disciplined whenever crossing railway level crossings. Stop briefly, look both left and right, then cross safely,"
